The state failed to prove a single
charge in the superior court yesterday
and the trials went forward with a
rush only to end in verdicts of not
guilty for those who were tried. There
were four negroes and one white man
before the court on criminal charges
Three of these were charges of assault
with intent to murder.
Ed Coleman, a young white man, was
the first to have a hearing yesterday.
He had been accused of breaking into
railroad cars. When the case came to
trial the accused man succeeded In
proving to the court and the jury that
he had only gone into a car for the
purpose of sleeping and could not for
this act be termed a burglar. The Jury
returned a verdict of not guilty and the
man was allowed his freedom.
Edmund Randall/ a negro, was in
court as the second man for the morn
ing on a charge of assault with Intent
to murder. The charge against him
was that of shooting at Tom Long,
fight was made on the plea of self-de
fense and this plea held with the Jury.
verdict of not guilty was secured
and the negro was promptly dis
charged.
Rich Fuller was up on a charge of
assault with Intent to murder. He hnd
been accused of stabbing a negro wo
man. The evidence was to the effect
that the woman was herself fighting
when the blow was struck and Fuller
was acquitted on a verdict of not guil
ty.
Celia Battle, a negro woman, was
charged with burglary. The case
against her was speedily heard and
the evidence turned to the advantage
of the accused woman. She secured a
verdict of not guilty and was dis
charged.
Genie Johnson was the last prisoner
for the session. Ho went Into court
late In the afternoon on a charge of
assault with Intent to murder. He was
charged with shooting at Wesley Jef
ferson, another negro last July. It wns
claimed that he was ordered away
from the home of Jefferson and that
when he went away he secured a gun
and returned and opened fire on him.
Johnson claimed In the defense that he
had first been driven out at the muzzle
of a gun and that this gun was snap
ped on him when he returned to the
place to mako peace.
Tho Jury In this case went out at six
o’clock Inst night and remained three
hours before making a verdict. This
was returned sealed and will be read
this morning.
There will bo a large number of
charges similar to those heard yester
day before tho session ends. There
are three or four charges of murder
against negroes yet to bo heard. To
day will probably end tho work of the
present week. There Is still more than
£ heavy week's work ahead for the
criminal branch and the court will be
very busy for some time.

it no happiness can be complete. How
sweet the picture of mother and babe,
angels smile at and commend the
thoughts and aspiration, of the motive*
bending over the cradle. The ordeal through
which the expectant mother must pass, how
ever, is so full of danger and suffering that
she looks forward to the hour when she shall
feel the exquisite thrill of motherhood with indescribable dread and

of child-birth can be entirely avoided by the use of Mother's Friend,
