NEW FEATURES DEVELOP
IN THE CHADWICK CASE
CLEVELAND, Deo. 6.—There were
numeroux new features developed to
day In connection with the affairs of
Mrs. Cassis I. Chadwick and the
troubles of the dosed Cltlxens' Na
tional bank of Oberlin, O. President
T. Beckwith and Cashier Frank
Spear of the latter Institution were
brought here from Oberlin by United
States Marshal Chandler and a deputy
shortly before noon. The bank ofriclala
were later arraigned before United
States Commissioner Starke. Both
pleaded not bullty and waived a
preliminary bearing. Commissioner
Starke fixed the ball at 610,000 In each
case and bound the two men over to
tho grand Jury, which meets In Feb
ruary next Spear waa shortly after
ward released on a bond. Late this
evening President Beckwith secured
bondsmen and the aged banker was
glvsn his freedom.
Carnegie's Name There.
That the Oberlin bank, or President
Beckwith, really possessed notes for
6250,000 and 6500,000 respectively, with
the name of Andrew Carnegie signed
thereto. Is now known as a definite
fact. Whether these notes are for
geries Is yet to be shown. This Island collaterals In their possession or
claims, It there la an attempt to pay
It out of any money that may be due
to the estate.
Kmll Chadwick, son of Mrs.
Chadwick, arrived here from Now
York today and at once went to his
mother’s home at the corner of Eucltd
and Genoese avenues. The young man
was deeply depressed. He refused to
talk for publication.
The two notes bearing tho signature
of Andrew Carnegie were found
nmong the assets of the Cttlxens- Na
tional Bank of Oberlin. According to
tho best obtainable Information these
notes are for 6260,000 and 6500,000 re
apectlvoly. The nolo for 6250.000, It
Is stated, bears the date of Jan. 7, 1004,
and reads os follows:
The Mote.
"One year after dntn I promise to
pay to C. L. Chadwick or order 6250,.
000 with interest at flvo per cent.
(Signed) "ANDREW CARNEGIE.'
This note Is endorsed on the back
by C. L. Chadwick.
The note for 6500,000 Is said to be In
tho safe deposit box of President 1 nV nn ffnlWn
Beckwith at oberlin and the key Is In 10 /? n Jr' 0110 ? 0
his possession. Bubpotnas were
sued today against Beckwith and
Spears and also Receiver Lyons of the
Oberlin bank by Commissioner Slsrke,
directing them to produco at the hear
Ing before the grand Jury all notee
authority of United
States District Attorney Sullivan and
a very prominent banker of Cleveland.
District Attorney Sullivan declared
tefday that he had the note for 6250,000
with Mr. Carnegie's signature In hts
possession and that It bore the name
of Andrew Carnegie und was Indorsed
by C. I* Chadwick. A widely known
banker; who requested that his name
not be used, stated poeltlvely that he
had seen the 6500,000 note signed "An
drew Carnegie." This banker said he
was not familiar enough with Mr. Car
negie's signature to state positively
whether the signature yua genuine or
a forgery.
Receiver Nathan Loeser filed hts
bond today, thus making him the legal
custodian of all property owned by
Mrs. Chadwick.
Tisi Up Property,
It IS stated that the approval of Mr.
Leaser's bond ties up absolutely all of
Mrs. Chadwick's property, and not
dollar of her debts can be paid out of
the proceeds of her estate. All cred
