The Atlanta Journal’s Washington
Correspondent Hears Just a Report
at the National papitol—Nothing
Known at the Congressman's Home,
But the Political Gossips Will Get
Busy.
Milt Saul the Atlanta Journal’s
Washington correspondent, wired the
following to hla paper yesterday.
Nothing has been beard of this by the
congressman’s friends In Macon. The
interesting story reads as follows:
WASHINGTON. Dec. 9.—There Is a
movement on foot among the friends of
Congressman Charles L. Bartlett. of (
the Macon district, to Induce him to
run for governor of Georgia.
While the movement hda not taken
shape yet, nor has the congressman
Intimated that he would or would not
make the race, yet It la possible that he
will announce before the real campaign
for the office opens up. He has already
been urged to announce as a candidate.
The desire to have Judge Bartlett
make the race arose from the white
supremacy talk which has been inter
esting the people of Georgia of late.
Jud£e Bartlett Is one of the recognised
leaders of this sentiment and It Is the
plan now to urge him to run on a plat
form founded upon white supremacy.
Judge Bartlett, It Is well known, be
lieves strongly that Georgia should
adopt new laws relating to the Iran
chlse privilege, his Idea being that
such laws should be designed along
the lines of the Mississippi election
law, which requires the voluntary pay
ment of poll tax In person and an edu
rational qualification before the right
of registration Is allowed. ~ This of
course would result In the disfran
chisement of numbers of negroes.
This would doubtless be the princi
pal plank In his platform should Judge
Bartlett decide to run. Another Idea
to which he Is strongly wedded Is the
adoption of the Australian ballot sys
tem for the state election and this
would also be a part of the platform.
In talking to a party of friends today
he pointed out that the Platt bill pro
poses to Inflict a more severe pqnlsh-
ment on Georgia than on any other
Southern state, although Georgia has
not disfranchised the negro.
'If we are to be shorn of representa
tion.” he nald. "why not secure white
supremacy for all time by disfran
chising the negro? We are to be pun
ished anyhow. It seems, and we might
as well get the benefit* enjoyed by oth
er states that have made white su
premacy secure."
