Numbers of suggestions have been
recently made as to the gathering of
toys, clothing and all kinds of mate
rial that can bo used as gifts.
One of the most prominent physi
cians In Macon, one noted for his acts
of charity, makes tho following sug
gestion:
“In the household of every well-to-
do family In Macon, stored away In
some closet. In the attic, or In some out
of the way place, la a lot of toys left
over from last Christmas. These toys
have outlived their usefulness. They
brought smiles to chubby faces on
Christmas morning a year ago, per
haps several years ago, and those
smiles amply repaid the parents. Thus
there is now no uso for the toys. They
must give way to new toys, and In
these days when children share the
_njodcrii, progressive Ideas of their
parent,,," the children consider their
old toys and playthings ns out of date.
In some households perhaps there are
toys that are priceless because of as
sociation. Perhaps some soiled and
ragged doll was once fondled and ca
ressed and rocked to sleop with a lisp
ing lullaby by some child that now
sleeps tho last sweet sleep,
"But there aro soiled and ragged
dolls, and bnlts, and choochoo cars,
wagons, and lots of things wise and
good men fashion for children that
ore cast away. Why not go Into the
closets, the attics, the out-of-way
places and gather up nn armful,
wagon full If you can, and send them
to Mayor Smith to bo distributed
among the children of the poor?
“There are children who go Into
rhapsodies over a piece of broken gl:
or china, who never fondled a doll,
and to whom a wagon would be
who gaxe at the toys In the shop win
dows and 'Wish they had fathers who
could buy Just one of them. The Iatrd
mad. these poor children even a. you
and I, but fortune smiled on us a little
more. The giving of these left-over
toys would tend to broaden the mind
of the child and to sweeten Its nature.
It would give the child a better Idea
of life. The giving will cost nothing,
hut the ray of sunshine It would throw
Into the homes of the poor would be
something'of glory. And somehow I
feel as though when the recording an
gel makes a not. of it, one's account
Is looked over, nnd the pen, la drawn
ncroaa the record of a thousand
wrongful acta.”
