Great Christmas Feast Will be 8pread
in Macon—Collection of Money and
8uppliea by the 8alvationista Well
Under Way—Other Free Dinners in
the City.
Throughout the city nil Indications
point to an abounding merry Christ
mas. The good-humored, Jostling
crowds In the streets and avenues give
hut few signs of any great necessity
to stint In their purchases. In many
of the best shops buying Is already ut
lta full tide, though Chrlstmus Is a
week off. None seem too poor to pur
chase some expression or other of good
will. In the front of the larger bus!
ness houses of the city tho carriages
of the rich of Macon have begun to
block the way. In the poorer quar
ters the pedestrians are swarming
more thickly day by day. ny Wednes
day the farmers of the vicinity will be
gin to come to town to make their
purchases and the** will serve to great
ly help swell the throngs upon the
streets. Day by day new street ven
ders appear on the eomers. The fire
works stands are coming Into promi
nence with a rush nnd by the middlo
of the week every street corner will be
either a post of a fireworks stum! or
seller of the catchpenny devices.
A few days ago the familiar pots nnd
tripods of the Hnlvntlon Army were
pieced on the corners end now the
pots are beginning to boll meirltly,
not from any warmth that Is under
neath but from the Increasing weight
of coin that hne been kindly placed In
side. Tbls money will be used In place
before the needy poor of the city a
bounteous Christmas dinner. The little
waifs at the Georgia Industrial Home
will also fare well on Christmas day.
They will be tendered a great dinner
by the members of the ladles' auxiliary
committee.
Little Ben 8chooler of Milledgevillo
Brought to Macon Sunday to Receive
Treatment—Was Ssriously Injured
While at* Play.
Play with bows and arrows will
cause little Ben Schooler the loss of
his left eye besides a deal of suffering
and confinement. On Friday last the
lad, who Is about 12 years of age, was
playing in company with other boys
of his age near his home In Milledge
villo. A chance shot caused an arrow,
driven with SOD14 .speed, to enter the
boy’s left eye. He was Immediately
carried home and a physician sum
moned.
The Injury was obstinate and yes
terday It was decided to bring ihe lad
to Macon qnd phita him In the city
hospital for treatment. This was done
and the fad reached the city yesterday
afternoon. The attending physicians
at the city Institution state that it Is
very probable that the eyesight In the
Injured organ will be lost.
Nearly two hundred members of the
local military companies attended ser
vices at the First Baptist church yester
day In response to the orders Issued last
week by Captains Hazelhurst, Wheeler
and Starr. AH three companies were out
In fuU dress and passed review in the
presence of members of the staff of the
Second Georgia regiment on First street
before marching in a body to the church.
On reaching the building the lines of
young men filed In at the central aisle,
the Volunteers first, the Hussars second
and the Floyd Kifles third. The congre
gation had given seating space In the au
ditorium and as the young men filed In
the first company took seats to the right
of the rostrum, the second directly In
front and the third to the left.
Dr. White and him congregation stood
while the companies entered the chureh
and when nil were seated the building
wan crowded with people. The pastor
was in uniform. He began by thanking
the members of the local military com
panies for the opportunity of speaking to
them. He regretted that Just at this time
there had been a conflict with the coming
of Captain Hobson and stated that the ar
rangement had ben made before knowl
edge of the visit of Capt. Hobson was
made known to the ahurch-going people.
“But soldiers only know to obey or
ders,” said he. "and you are here to at
tend a service which It gives our congre
gation great pleasure to witness.” Dr.
White then dcHvered the sermon of the
morning. This was not strictly a special
one for the soldiers alone, but was a dis
course well salted to the occasion and In
terested both the military hearers and the
other visitors among the congregation.
At the close of the services the congre
gatlon arose and waited at their seats for
the companies to file out. The Floyd
Rlfies took the lead In tho march from the
church, the Husmrs followed and tho
Volunteers were in the rear. On First
street all three companies were halted
together and heard some remarks from
Major Walter Harris, wno thanked tho
companies for their appearance and at
tendance upon the church sendees.
Here the three companies were sepa
rated and all went to their respective
armories. Before the members were dis
missed for the morning each captain
thanked his comonny for the prompt re
sponse to the Call and the annual attend
ance upon divine service for tho year 1904
was at an end.
Col. Huguentn, Adjt. Thomas. Major
Harris and the other members of the
staff accompanied the battalion march
of the three companies.
