Fund.
Through the kindness of Mr. Louis
J. Dinkier, proprietor of the new up-
tn-dnti* skating rink at the corner of
Third and Mulberry slreela, the money
taken in during the day waa turned
over to the poor fund. During the day
and evening the apacloua hall waa
thronged with skaters who whirled np
and down the glgxed floor. The crowds
were merry nnd while not enjoying the
fun innny seated themselves around
the stden of the rink nnd looked on.
There ere many graceful skntcra up
on the floor nnd they kindly assisted I he
novices In the art of the sport. A num
ber of ludlea were present nnd several
tried the gams with more or less In
teresting results. In a few days the
sport will have n good grasp upon the
people of the city nnd skating rink
will prove a great source of enjoy
ment during the winter months.

Six New Carriora Have Been Put on
Foree to Assist in Distribution of

Ordsr Business.
Rlx extra carriers will be on at the
Macon pontofflce during the Christman
holidays. There will be a large amount
of mall to be delivered throughout the
city and the work will require this
number of additional carriers. The In-
dlc&tiona point to the transaction of
an enormous amount of work during
the holidays at the postoffice.
The first day In the money order de
partment han resulted in the payment
of over one thousand money orders.
These represent near 15.000. It Is esti
mated that the work In this depart
ment will reach as high an 15,000 or
ders before the highest mark in reach
ed. The cashing of orders will then
amount to In the'neighborhood of $7,-
000.
The heavy malta have already begun.
The distribution yesterday was very
burdensome to the city carriers and
before the week Is out Santa Claus will
visit many homes In the city through
the pourhes of the postmen. The en
tire force will be busy with extra mall
for some time and the business for the
month of December In the pontofflce
will reach above the $10,000 mark.

BLIND NEGRO SHOOTS
ANOTHER IN ANKLE
United States Deputy Marshals
George Thomas, W. E. Roberts, and
Deputy Collector E. J. Hinton spent
Sunday afternoon in the woods of Up
son county and as a result a large
moonshine*’ distillery was destroyed
and the officers fell among those who
operated It but came out with only a
negro who had been doing the firing.
The officers were hidden In the woods
near the still and watched It In opera
tion for aome time before they made a
rush for the grounds.
The still destroyed waa a large cop
per outfit and waa warmed for work.
The negro waa pulling the fire when
the officers walked In. Other parties
had been seen on the grounds, but left
while the attempt was being made to
surround the spot The revenue off!
cers were secreted In a hidden spot
and saw the men cap the still and
plaster it for work. The “moonshine'
whisky was being made when about
one o'clock In the afternoon the raid
was made. No one other than the ne
gro was captured. The other parties
had slipped away ajid the officers were
not able to find them. Smutty tracks
were found in the trail which led out
from the thicket where the still wi
operation and these tracks revealed
that a man was making his escape that
way. A further search was made but
no, man could be found.
The still and fixtures were destroy-
I. From 800 to 1,000 gallons of beer
awaited distillation Into Christmas
"mountain dew." This was destroyed
and the officers returned to the city
yesterday morning with the negro who
gave his name as Sam McGill. He Is
a young negro and said he was em
ployed to run the still.
He was tried before United States
Commissioner L. M. Erwin yesterday
morning and a bond was fixed.. He
could not make the bond and is now
in Bibb county Jail. This will be
mada, however, and he will return
home ns soon as friends can reach
Macon.
The still ond fixtures were found
In a thicket on the Jack Smith place
in Upson near Cress, Oa. The officers
stated that the stl|] had been in opera
tion for some time and also said that
the men they had seen were white
men. The business was an extensive
one. The name of the man who hnd
charge was furnished the officers and
they are awaiting further develop-

The difficulty that led to the shoot
ing occurred last evening shortly after
eight o'clock In a bar room. Around
the bar several negroes were congre
gated, many of them had been drink
ing and as the effects of the liquor be
gan to tell words began to flow thnt
were displeasing to many. One blind
negro named Joe Rolan, who makes a
living by playing a piano. Is alleged
to have entered In a spirited dispute
about a women with another of the
occupants of the bar. He became ex
ceedingly boisterous and ended the dis
cussion by jerking a gun from hta
pocket and letting fiy one of the lead-
•n pellets. The ball struck Gibson
Chism, an uninterested party. In the
left ankle. The city hospital ambu
lance was summoned and the wounded
man waa taken to the hospital where
hit Injuries were dressed.
A few minutes later Rolan was
placed untfer arrest and taken to the
police barracks where he was locked
up. The shooting created a good deal
of excitement in the neighborhood.
