The retallera have already supplied
themselves with articles tor tha
Christmas festivity. The Macon mer
chants are well suppUed with every
kind of foodstuff that la llktly to be
called for. ,
Branches of pine trees, cedars,
wreaths of holty and hero and there
a piece of mistletoe, form the decora
tions at the stores. Many of the city
merchants have handsomely decorat
ed their stores. The effects are marked
and no doubt many a sale la se
cured by the tasteful manner In which
the articles fur sale have been set oft
by the decorations. A rather new fea
ture this season In the line of decora
tions Is the red bell, and the red
wreaths. Hanging In store windows
green effect present a picturesque
scene.
Today tho farmers of the neighbor
ing counties will appear In the city
with wagon loads of their products.
Holly and mistletoe and holly will be
brought In In quantities. Cedar and
pine trees of suitable size will he of
fered for sale to be used as Christmas
trees. The more fancy grocery stores
of the city will have on sale all the
novelties In tho line ot eatables.
Christmas poultry will begin to ar-
rive today, and the rush of supply and
demand will he in full force by Thurs
day. While turkeys do not have such
a demand as at Thanksgiving day, It
is 'believed that they will be as plen
tiful aa needed. It Is stated that their
growth and atate of fatnees will be tar
better than those sold for consumption
on November 24th. As to prices they
will be about the same as those that
ruled Thanksgiving day.
Meats of all kinds are ranged up In
the cold rooms of all tho city mer
chant* in most attractive ranks ot
golden quarter* and aide* of bullocks
and creamy careaase* of mutton, lamb,
and veal. The fruits of the reason are
In abundance and Christmas assorted
nuts and raisins are dally having n
great demand.

was living.
This testimony was Important be
cause It waa alleged by the prosecu
tion that It was at shout the same
hour at which the sixth race was run
that the revolver with which Young
tvas shot waa sold by Pawnbroker
Stern. The prosecution sought to show
that the revolver waa purchased by
J. Morgan Smith.
‘Did you vlilt a pawn shop on that
day"
“Never." .
"Were you ever present on that day
or any other, when a platol ot any
character was purchased by Mr.
Smith?"
"Never."
"Did you ever see Hyman Btern, tha
pawnbroker, before he appeared on the
witness stand?"
Didn't Know Pawnbroker.
"No."
"Were you In Pabst's restaurant that
night?"
“I waa not."
"Were you anywhere near that place
that night?"
"I was not."
"You heard Joseph Hewitt teitlfy
that you came out of that restaurant
with a man; that a cab stood by; that
ha said, 'You must:' that you aald ‘I
won't.' and that he struck you In the
face? Is that true?"
"It Is not”
She told of her meeting that night
with Young, and denied the testimony
of Wm. Luce. She said that aha neith
er quarreled with Young nor cried,
and that Young did not strike her.
Did you soy you would prevent him
from taking passage on the boat?" she
was asked.
"No." shb answered.
When they 'left the saloon they
walked over to 135th atreet and Eighth
avenue, where Luce hailed a cab. She
continued:

Mis* Patterson said that next morn
ing the was awakened by Mrs. Smith,
who said Young bad telephoned her to
meet him at Pahat’e In Columbus Cir
cle. She took her hand-bag, contain
ing a bandkarchltf sad calling cards,
and started. Young was angry, she
said, because ah* was so long In ar
riving at Pahat'a She also said ha
felt the effect* of what he had been
drinking. After taking a drink they
started down town tn a cab. She de
nted that she knew they were on the
way to the otaamriilp pter. Young
.topped at a hat stare and then went
Into a saloon, where they had taro
drinks of whisky.
Mr. Levy showed the witness a pos
tal card which Yeung had given her,
containing her name and address.

about my going away, too. I told him
to go away and laava me for awhile.
He aald I could come over after him
when things ehould have quieted
down. He said that he might not seo
me tor a long while and aald alio that
he might never see me again. He was
getting more excited end put his hand
around me. He grabbed me roughly
and kind ot pushed me over towards
the ride of tho cab. All of a sudden
I heard a report There was a flash
and then—tbe end.”
"Did you see the pistol In Young’s
bandr* aaked Mr. Levy.
"No."
"What happened after the report?"
"He fell over In my Iqp. He raised
halt way up and fell down again. It
reamed age* before any one came."
She then denied that ehe shot Young
or that she ever owned a revolver.
Thla ended the direct examination and
court adjourned until tomorrow morn
ing. when Mr. Rand will commence
the cross examination.
A 'Phone Meisage-
Having waived the privilege ef mak
ing an opening address Mr. Levy call-*

send. She aald that on June 9 last, aha
waa employed as a telephone operator
at the 8L Paul hotel where the de
fendant and the Smiths resided. She
eald that on that evening Young rail
ed her up ar.d gave her a message
which was delivered to Miss Patter
son.
Edward S. Grossman, a clerk in an
Eighth avenue confectionery store,
said that Young used the telephone tn
the store shortly after 7 o'clock on tbe
moraine of June 4. According to th
w!tress, when Young got hte coarse
tlon through the central office, he said;
“Good morning, how do you feel this
morning? Hurry up and get dressed
and meet me.”
The first alleged eye witness of tho
tragedy in the cab called by the de
fense was Milton W. Hazelton. an In
ventor of Oneonta, N. Y. Mr. Haseltm
said he taw a cab approaching which
contained the defendant and a man.
Ae the cab neared him ha saw the Sash
of a revolver.
Young Had Revolver.
"Did the man have the revolver tn
his hand at tho time of tho report and
flash?" asked Mr. Levy.
"He did.” replied the witness
"He had both hta hands raised above
hie left shoulder. As the shot rang
out the man's head fell Into the wo
man's lap and ehe placed her hands
on top of hta head."
Mr. Hazelton said the shooting was
seen also by a stranger who waa a
Freemason.
