Chief Connor's flrat orders were l»- sued to the Macon police force yenter- day. Five different orders were read to the patrolmen before the last relief went on duty at It o’clock laat night The flrat of these orders was that which requires sll members of the force to wear nothing on their uni forms other than the officer's balge. This order was read to all three reliefs and goes Into effect Immediately. The second order Issued was one affecting the small boy and his fireworks. This qrder laid special stress upon the watch In the streets where cotton Is now piled. The third and most Important order Issued was that which changed the re lief* upon the force. This order placc-J former Chief Murphy at the head of the first relief formerly known ua the third relief and In charge of Lieuten ant Conner. Lieutenant Grace was changed from first relief to second and has his former squad. Lieutenant Moseley wae changed from second to third relief snd aleo has his former sqund of men. Chief Murphy went to the duties of llutcnant yesterday, stating that he felt very much pleaeed with the change and said he was sura that a shifting of responsibilities would mean much to him. Chief Conner wont to the duties of his new office us a man well acquainted with the position end the force Is now working as If ne change had been made. They are al ways fresh. FRAUDULENT VOTES. by Lieutenant Grace of the police force iptured a negro yesterday In a aeries of robberies, the smoothest known to that officer In years. Clothing, such as coats, pants, shoes and h&ta had ben missed from one of the hotels for some time and the pa tronage was being robbed systemati cally without any mean* of catching the robber. Many valuable garments had been missed and no one could trace them down. The police force noon began to sus pect a negro porter who gives his name as Will Frederick. Yesterday Lieutenant Grace found his oppor tunity and sent an officer to arrest the negro as he was attempting to sell two coats to a negro from the country on Poplar street He still had the coats when carried to the police station. The officer stated that the negro had been accustomed to offer clothing for sale on this street when he could find a customer from the country. He usually stated to the buyer that he was selling them for his employer who had taken them In payment of board bills. No one suspected the negro for some time and it i* said that he kept up this scheme for several weeks. The negro Is now at the barracks awaiting a hearing before the recorder this morning. DENVER, Colo., Dsc. 21.—The report presented to the supreme court today by the handwriting experts who ex amined the ballots In the box from precinct two, ward four, of this city, showed that of 356 vote*, 144 were ap parently fraudulent. One hundred and forty ballots with the Democratic heading were reported to have been written by five persons, one of whom had written 11$. Four ballots with the Republican heading had been written by two persons. There were In tho box 177 Democratic nnd twenty-eight Republican ballots which appeared to bo regulnr. M. M. Hamm, Republican expert, tes tified to hla belief that on closer ex amination at least 100 of the ballots which appeared to be regular would, prove to be fraudulent. Georgo King.
