ter the manner of tho first. There was
more white paper, more picture* of
angola nnd more black woodwork. Aa
further garnlahlng of the meal
menus were laid at each plate. These
had black borders nnd bore hand-
sketched tombstones, upon which were
Inscribed empltnphs. When the guests
left the house, after listening to witty
stories and nnerdote* relative to Mrs.
Mac Fnrlane No. 2. they observed that
two black stripes had beon painted on
the white hltrhlng-post.
MacFarlane eventually married a
third time, nnd for three years lived
most prosnlc life. The third mis
tress of the house was not required to
awesr that she would not enter the
rooma of her predecessors, hut she made
a solemn promise to this effect before
the wedding. She eventually went on
visit to her parents In Halifax,
where ahe was taken with diphtheria
and died before her husband reached
her. This was a terrible blow to Mac-
Fnrlane. nnd after the woman had
been hurled beside the other wives he
took to his bed.
When he got up he decorated another
room In mourning and Invited
friends to a strawberry festival. As
usual he ushered his guei\j* to the
chamber occupied by the departed He
delivered a funeral oration before an
elaborate dinner was served, nnd then
enlivened the evening with more nnec-
dotes. The whole affair was excellent
and the guests, who had now become
accustomed to MacFarlune'a ways, took
things as a matter of course and ex
pected to see another stripe In the
hitching post. They were not disap
pointed. They were not even Jarred
when the hoot offered to marry any of
the single ladles present.
While none accepted the offer It was
not long before MacFarlane hitched up
again. This time to a girl from Syd
ney who hadn't heard of the previous
wives. When she reached the house
nnd found three chambers IocV«d she
broke into one and the sight 10 ».» vked
her that she went home to her mother.
While she was taking stop* to procure
a separation she died of pneumonia.
