for Christmas Day. Tonight thous

pay his visit until the grey hours of
morning but still he will corne and that

On Monday the real celebrations will

other paths. On Monday the children

Monday hundreds of Christmas parties

wish a merry day and get a taste of
Christmas punch.
Today will probably be the busiest
of the season with the city merchants.
Although the stores have been well
patronised all during the week, today's
sales are expected to break former rec-

Children will arise, take n peep at
their stockings, grab a handful of the
sweetmeats and hike It back to bed

Cook will drop in half an hour late,

Children dress and endeavor to be
the first to spring the "Christmas gift"

From Which a Fuse Is Extended—It
Looks Explodable and He intends to

Deputy Hherlff I^eo Herrington, who has
for the past seventeen years been In the
sheriff's office. In looking over the
rurnulitlon of confiscated goods nt the
court house yesterday, discovered a small
Jug that was closely wrapped with twine
and a fuse attached. He does not know
where h« obtained possession of the bomb,
but It Is sure that It was secured when
personal effects were taken by levy. It
evidently concealed In a batch of
goods or else Its appearance would have
attracted attention at the time.
_..r. Herrington has determined that
the best thing to do with it Is to pitch
It In the river, as no one has appeared
who Is willing to test It.

sity, who has been In Auburn. Ala., during
the sessions of the Southern Intercolle
giate Athletic Association as a represen
tatlve of his Institution, returned yes

A negro man made a desperate attempt
to snarh the purse of Mrs. C. B. Moore,
wife of one of Macon's populnr clothiers,
laat night as she was about to enter the
family residence at 'HI Third street. The
negro walked up from bentnrt. and at the
moment of entering the house he reached
for the purse before Mrs. Moor* realised
wliat he waa after.
Ilad the lady failed to notice that the
negro waa h-lilnd her she might have
lost the purse, but as he mnri«y the at
tempt to secure It. she evaded him nnd
saved It. The negro run away while
she was calling for nn officer, and was

patrolman reached the scene. The n©'
gro has not been captured.
Maw. Moore stated that the negro fol
lowed her from the Jewish synagogue to
her home before he made an attempt to
secure her purse. She had been nt
traded by his presence but was not

nn officer, making no further attempt to
secure the tiuroe. This Is the second*
close coll In Macon during the week, and
the officers are making efforta to locate

Deputy Sheriff W. A. Smith captured
a negro In East Macon yesterday who
to wanted In Htbh on a charge of as-
suit with Intent to murdefr. He walked

Thomas 0. Ryman. aged 63 years, and
one of the most widely known river men
In the South, died at hta home here to-
nlsht. He was president of the Hyman
lines which operated steamboats from
hers In three divisions: The NsshvtUe
and Burnalde; Nashville, Paducah snd
Calm, and the Nashville and Evansville.

city several weeka ago and the Injured
man lay desperately 111 for about two
weeka. Johnson skipped and was not

NEGRO WHO WAS SHOT
Body Identified Yesterday as That of
8ection Hand, but Slayer Is Not
Known—Jury Failed to Fix Roepon-
aibility.
The coroner’s inquest In the killing
! the negro In Burdick's alley re
sulted yesterday in placing the name
of Matthew Boytngton upon the papers
as the man who was killed and John
Wood os one of the members of the
party with whom the dead man waa
lest seen. Utter the body was identi
fied by other negroes as that of Boy-
l °T1ke negroes mentioned In the report
of yesterday were section men and
had cashed the Central railroad checks
at the bar. but the man who did the
killing Is yet unknown to the officers.
A witness who saw part of the affair
stated that three negroes ran off down
the alley after the shooting.
The coroner’s Jury failed to place
the responsibility. John Wood, who
waa said to be with the negro who
was killed, waa one of the thre* who
ran away and has n«t been found.
The other two negroes have also failed
le show up. No one has been able to I
give a reason for the killing. The deed I
