WEATHER BUREAU
ON MKIM’Hli’S CAMPUS
AUTHORITIES OF MERCER AND OF WEATHER BUREAU AT WASH.
INOTON PLAN THE ERECTION OF A NEW BUILDING ON CAM-
PUS INVOLVING THE CREATION OF A FULLY EQUIPPED DE
PARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY AND PHYSIOGRAPHY IN CON
NECTION WITH THE CURRICULUM OP THE UNIVERSITY.
Negotiations ara now on between
the authorities of the weather bureau
at Washington end Acting President
Kilpatrick and board of trusteed of
Mercer University which point strong
ly to the wddltlon of another depart
ment at Mercer and at tba same time
places the weather bureau of the cltiy
of Macon In a handsome new building
to be erected on the campus of the Uni
versity.
For several days past all parties con
cerned have been busy with a propo
sition to erect a weather observatory
at Mercer and place the atatlon In Ma
con In this building. The plan carries
with It the offer of Mercer to the
weather bureau at Washington of
grounds upon which to erect the build
ing and In rum this Institution Is to
have a department of meteorology and
physiography with th* forecaster of
the weather bureau In Macon In
charge.
The building proposed Is to be two
stories and will be large enough to
fully accommodate tho weather bureau
In Macor^and tho department which Is
fo be added to the University. This
will csrry with tt the necessity of
erecting a building which will have
lecture room and laboratory.
A choice spot on the campus naai
the Y. M. C. A. building at Mercer has
been selected ntid gona over by both
sides concerned and communications
have conveyed the news that the prop
osition has met with favor both In
Washington and with Acting President
Kilpatrick and the board of trustees
of Mercer. It Is now highly prohabla
thst steps will be taken to put the
weather bureau In Macon In a hand
some building at Mefcer In time for
permanent quartern before the present
federal building Is pulled down.
Professor John R. Weeks will be In
'nine and
lie public lands by mean* of
forged applications, falne and
tavitft. and proofs of homestead
charge of both tha weather bureau Hera
and the new department at Mercer. Ha
will he In charge of the course of lec
tures. The further details have not
been worked out at to what hours will
he kept In the new department of the
University and what will be the full
adv&ntNgen of the course, but it ean
be stated that this will he a great ad
vantage to Mercer and the young men
who will work- out the problems of
University research In Macon.
Professor Weeks will also have hln
residence In .the new building and all
apparatus for the weather station.
The building win be planned with the
view of making It u part of the Uni
versity as well as the government and
an be stated that the Interest al
ready taken has been such as to assure
tho addition of a department to Mer
cer which will be of marked value to
that Institution. The purpose will also
be to erect a building and fully equip
It for all the necessary work In the
weather reports.
Professor Weeks and the authorities
at Washington have desired to put the
station In Macon In such quarters ns
w!4 enable them to render the best of
service and 1^1* known that the new
building If much needed. Now that
there will be more than four years In
which tha weather bureau will be out
of the federal building In Macon the
proposition to erect the observatory on
the campus at Mercer ha* met with
great favor.
Acting President Kilpatrick and the
board of trustees at Mercer have been
anxious to have the department added
which will be afforded In the removal
of the weather bureau tp the <*mpu*
and It Is generally believed that the
advantages which will Inure both to
the weather bureau at Washington and
tho authorities at Mercer will he such
aa to Insure the speedy action of both
and the erection of the building In
time to place Professor Weeks on the
campus before the old federal building
Is pulled down. .

poor during the severe cold and stated
that this would be gratifying to mem
bers of council.
Mayor Smith stated that there would
be a meeting of the finance committee
In his office at 8 o’clock tonight at
which time many of the Important
matters now awaiting tne action of
this committee will be disposed of.
Alderman Guttenberger introduced a
resolution providing for the Increase

Alderman Sloan and Alderman Jonea
had a spirited discussion over the
management of the mules and carta of
the street force and the cutting of
grass on the park property last fall.
Alderman Sloan stated the mulea of
the street department were In very
bad condition and said something
ought to be done In order to have bet
ter car* taken of them. He stated that
the carts were left out In the weather
and wanted to know why Alderman
Jones had not looked after them. ■■
Alderman Jones replied In a spirited
manner and recalled the cutting of
grass at Central City park last fall,
stating that Alderman Sloan had giv
en away half of it to have the other
half cut.
Alderman Sloan wanted the city to
havo Its own blacksmith, shop and
stated that a large amount of money
could be saved In shoeing horses and
other work which would be necessary
during the year. He was cut short
by Alderman Jahes who ridiculed the
Idea of saving anything for the city
from a blacksmith shop. Council ad
journed while the two aldermen were
still furnishing amusement for the
body.
