INTERESTING PAPER AS TO
THE TRAIN INCA OP NURSES.

Among the many Interesting papers
read at the convention, was ona by
Miss Alkens, one of the nurses, that
seems to have made a hit. It was on
“The Relationship of the Training
School to Hospital Efficiency.”
The Toronto Telegram says Miss
Athens hit out from the shoulder, and
made statements sufficiently Import
ant to rouse the whole association to
a deeper sense of Its responsibilities.
She deemed the training school es
sential to efficiency in nursing. Poor
conditions might be overcome ■■
good nurses, but poor nurses could
never be perfocted by the best of bos
pita! conditions. “The real essence of
nursing,” said Mies Aiken*,
always be personal service to the sick

field or knowledge a nurse might v

that sho trespassed upon the field of
others, and that the crowning glory
of her achievements must be nursing.
Miss Alkens showed that the tend

nursing. It seoms strange to her that
the modern nuqpe must pass through
the hands of from twenty to thirty
lecturers, dealing with a hundred sub
jects, before being qualified for hu
manttarlan work. She believed It
nonsense to think that the nearer i
nurse approached the medical profes
sion In training so much the bettet
would be her standard. There was a
vast difference between medlelno and
the duties of & nurse. Nurses were
frequently taken away from the can
of patients lit orltlcnl times to listen
to lectures that were, from a nurae'r
standpoint, pure twaddle.
The essence of the whole problem
was: “What aro the essentials
nursing education, theoretical nnd
practical?" ‘‘I urn firmly of the opln-
she said, "that the efficiency of
the nursing service will bo Increased
by having more teaching dono nt the
bedside and less In tho classroom.'
The laws bearing upon training
schools, upon which the efficiency of
hospital depends, went a long way *c
Imperil the efficiency of the nursing
service. While It was desirable that
nurses should be educated, she could
never believe that a hlgfh school train

a nurse, tho fitness of whom would be
never determined by any gauge of ed
