Tne topic for the meeting of the League oi Georgia Municipalities now helnr ’ * * In Albany, is "The City Beautiful! good stivets and sidewalks makes up 90 per cent of the city beautiful. Cleveland. O., Is working along these lines, as all cities should, nnd Is having lawns be tween the sidewalk and curb on all the residence afreets. These will be beau tified with flowers. It being proposed that tho city aid the scheme I»y distributing ns manv seeds as possible to the city beautiful builders free of cost. The agsM engineer of Cleveland prefers, bowj „ ^— ... .. wdld hedge of four-o’clocks. Macon has the advantage of all the cities In this respect. She has both the lawns between the curb and sidewalk nnd between the sidewalk and the prop erty line. More than thla, Macon has the level and the Hilly streets, park and lawns. The landscape gardener and the park engineer ***y that of all the cities In the world Macon possesses better foun dation for n city beautiful than any other city Jn tho United Staten, but nil nay thnt it would require a large expend iture of money. They aay, though, that the city, with a start at the work, ad ding something each year, could gain the desired- end at a small cost each year. Thev were looking nt the very unkent condition of the Poplar street parks yesterday morning, noting the litter of fodder and straw that the wind seetterlng all over the sidewalks either side of the street. 'There Is no city In the country that would allow that." said Mr. N. M. Block, "by all means the parks ougth to be grassed over and kept clean. "What about 4 ptaea to'itofe the ton?" was asked. "Wheh the city makes thege. places green with grass so that the strangers ■from the -qplon depot, on their way up town, ran ste something better fhnn this’ mess on one,of the principal streets of the city, the warehousemen will extend their warehouses, or rent other nitres." "But how about the country teams— surely nothing should be done to keep out the country trade, and we all want the farmers to © * "There is not i ... who would refuse to come to Macon be cause of a small fee to shelter and take care of his team while he is trad ing. These stablemen will provide for them, nnd if not there are places wh< yard* enn he established. You don’t i this kind of thing In Atlanta, or n eltv that Ig growing." This net some of the older peoplo to thinking of how It used to be. Time was when Mulberry. Third nnd even Sec ond street, were used for the feedlnrf places for the teams that came In from the country. And there were several wagon yards In town. There was Tutt' wagon yard between and tne countrymen were glad to pay for the safe-keeping of their teams.™ The keeping clean of the parks Poplar street will require a force niP rate from the regular street-sweeping force. And this Is why these places presented such an unsightly appearance yesterday and Sunday. That they do not strike the Stranrcr favorably on Sunday la certain, but It ntended that week days, with the parka filled with country teams, and the middle of the afreets where there are no parks tilled Had m Close Call. From the testi mony of a crpwd of witnesses, it seem ed that Mattox was annoyed during his address by the howling of a hound In tho yard of Sister Jones who lived ad joining lota to Melvlny in Yamacraw. Sister Jonea was present, and she loted her hound with the devotion and Intensity of all negroes for a dog. This Is the address and the story of the trouble as picked out from tho mass of testimony: iBruwer Mattox started his talk, and every time he raised hi a voice to any thing like a high pitch the hound would break In with hjs "ow-oo-oo." The presi dent denied that In* was to take a trio to the Pacific Slope as had been stated- and In fact gave the delegation to un derstand that he was not go.'ng to take the stump at all. They told him that tlu» campaign would be practically over nt the time of his visit, and that be would be expected to speak to the farmers and the people generally on the development of the country, etc This fieonml to strike him right, as it was Just the Ihfc on which lie desired to speak. He referred his visitor* to Gen. Luke Wright and after the go rl- byes. the Macon party went nt once to see I he general. He said that tis would be pleased to accompany the president to Macon.
