MUCH NERVOUSNESS
IN STOCK MARKET
NEW YORK. Oct Whether ap
pearance of the Balkan*war cloud or for
some other reason, there was much nerv
ousness manifest in today's stock mar
ket. Buying to cover by the interest
which sold freely In the final break yes
terday was an element In tho spurt Tho
news arriving from abroad by that time
also was of a reassuring character.
Tho adjournment of tho Northern Pa
cine directors for instance, without de
daring that large extra cash dividend
mBoenf
which was confidently Predicted yester
day proved disconcerting to A considera
ble speculative element which had boon
operating confidently on tho strength of
these predictions.
The failure of the Northern Paclfls ru
mors to come true cost suspicion on a
number of other rumors which were ef
fective In yesterday’s speculation and
awakened a fear that they had been
prompted simply by speculative manipu
lation. The afternoon weakness was
traceable, in part, to the news or the em
barrassment of an Import bond house,
having connections both In New York
and Boston and to tne knowledge of the
measures which had to be taken to con
serve the large resources involved.
The market ended strong under the In
fluence of the animated dealings In Rock
Island preferred.
Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par
value. $3,920,000.
United States bonds woro unchanged
Total sales today 748.100 sharos.
