YOUNG MEN IN SEARCH OF SUP POSED 8PANI8H BURIED GOLD fcACE DEATH IN STORM, BALTIMORE, Oct. 8—Not laden with treasure from a long lost Spanish tfal* leon as they had fondly hoped, but themselves cast away and rescued In' the nick of time from the wreck of tho once gallant cup defender, the yacht Mayflower, a dozen men were landed here today by the Norwegian Hlppolyte Dumola after having patted through the terror* of the recent hur ricane that awept uo the coast. The rescued men are; G. H. Scull, of Bos. ton; R. A. Derby, of New York; 8. H. Noyes, of Newport, R. I.; Hayden Richardson, of New York; S. S. Boyls- ton. of 8kaneatlles. N. Y.; Captain C. Harding; Edward Perham. mate; Jos Higgins, steward; J. NeiUon; „C. F Oursen; A. Speacher: E. Blouston. In Quest of Treasure. This Is the unromantlc end of a ven ture, tinged with romance which had for Its object the locating of a Spanish vesssl lost many years ago In the Car- rlbean sea with much treasuro aboard. Of the men rescued, tho first five are Harvard men and tho leaders of the expedition. The others arc members of tU‘‘ crew/of the Mayflower, and It would seem the lron.v «f fate that the vessel the party went In search of had already been located by others and ail her discoverable gold removed. Harrowing Experience. It was as representing the South- n Exploration Company that the ex pedition left New York on Septem ber 20 In the Mayflower. The weath er was favorable until Thursday of last week, when about noon the hurricane was encountered, the Mayflower being at the time •about 200 miles east of Watllng Island. Captain Harding, aft er lifelong experience at sea. declares that the storm and the experiences It brought those in the party was the most harrowing he has ever known. The Captain’s Story. 'On Friday morning,” said Captain Harding, "the storm had grown much worse. Time find again v/o thought the yaoht would turn completely over. Finally she refused to right herself. Tho rigging went by tho board and six thousand pounds of dynamite, we Intended to use to uncover the Span ish gold when we should have located the galleon was thrown overbonrd. to* gyther with other stores. We had nothing to eat. but canned meal and crackers, all'the other food being wa- tersoaked. Before daylight on Satur day we sent up rockets and these at tracted the attention of the steamer Advance, of the Panama railroad line, bound from Colon for New York. She signaled that she would not leave us. but we later lost sight of ly»r in the heavy rain squalls. Hope seemed to go with her. but as we were beginning to despair, the steamer Ran. from Dai quiri for Baltimore was sighted and later that day. Sunday, the Hlpnolvte Dumols Joined the Ran and Anally succeeded In getting a line aboard, and here we are." Desperate Ffqht For Life. Captain Harding's statement gives only a faint Idea of what he and those with him went through, aa first tho Advance and than the Ran 'tried to help, hut failed signally. The Ran appeared as near the Mayflower as she dared, but try ns her crew would, they could neither launch a boat hot get a lino te the yacht. It was Sunday afternoon when the Dumols. laden with bananas from Port Antonio, Jamaica, for ‘Baltimore, Joined the Ran and for two hours maneuvered about the little yacht. Finally Captain Danielson managed to bring the Dumols to wind ward of the Mayflower and with a well aimed shot sent a line flying across the wreck. Eager hands grasped It, for It meant salvation, hope of which had been all but abandoned. Then came the life buoy and In It man after man was drawn from the Mayflower to the Dumols. Boyleston wns the last man to leave the wreck and with-him he brought the United State*' flag. After three sleepless nights and days of ter ror they were safe. No Lives Lost, Not a life had been lost and the res cue was attended by only one accident OHcnr Carlsen of tho Dumols, was operating a donkey engine by which those on the Mayflower woro being drawn aboard, when a wire cable snap ped and eurled about his neck. Ho was still confined to his bunk when the Dumols arrived today. As soon as the rescued men were landed all left for New York except Mr. Royles- ton. who h**s r-latlvee In this city. Thrilling Rescue. Captain Harding paid a high com pJIment to the men of tho rescuing steamer when he said; The rescue was one of the most thrilling I have ever gone through. I have been near ly sixty years at sea and have been shipwrecked twice before, but I never saw such life saving work as that done by the crew of the Dumols.” When abandoned the Mayflower was In latitude 28.S1 north and longitude 74.5$ west. She was atll) afloat when the Dumols left her. The Mysterious Vessel. While much mystery has been thrown around the Mayflower expedition It la understood that the Spanish vessel for which search was to have been made went down about sixty miles from Ja maica. Recent advices are to the ef fect that a Jamaican expedition headed by a son of SJr Arthur Blak#, at one time governor of Jamaica, recently, found the location of the Spanish ves sel, which, however, the divers dls covered had been broken up. They recovered a few gold pieces. The fame of the yacht Mayflower dates from !S*« when she defeated the British yacht Galatea, the then chal lenger for the American cup. She was afterward transformed Ipto a two^ masted schooner and fitted with an en< glne. No. 461 Third Street. 'Phone 360. For Sale For Sale Poli(je (®oapt Becky's Costly Hat. In Yamacruw zoclety.
