LOOKING TO PRACTICAL
MEANS TO HELP FARMERS.
ATHENS. Qg.. Oct. 11—The State

way In Gcoraia for better roads. This
Is to bo drine through a good roads'
school that Is to bo held as .a part
of the state college In this city next
January.
The whole elate !• aware of the good
work done by the college last January
In the inauguration of the cotton school
which wa* attended by ono hundred
nnd four representatives farmers from
Dfty-three counties in this state. This
school will be held again next January
for ten days.
Following the cotton school will be
a great conference of farmers, during
the session of which the new hundred
thousand dollar agricultural hall will
be formally dedicated. This will be
made a great event in the history of
agricultural development In Georgia.
Following that will be a live days’
session of the good roads' school. The
state college sees the necessity for
scientific and thoroughly effective road
work In Georgia, especially as the con
victs are for the most part to be used
on road work by the several counties
of the state after next April. There Is
no other way l n which the etete col
lege can confer a more direct or more
lasting benottt on the farmers of the
state than to heln bring about a road
Improvement that will last. In view
of this, the authorities of the college
hare planned for a great school for
road Improvement and Invites to this
school all thoso Georgians who are
Interested vitally In read Improvement
County Officers Invited.
While all will be wclcomo. It Is es
pecially desired that tne county com
missioners of all tho counties of tho
stato be present as well as the road
engineers of those counties that are to
do permanent road Improvement work.
It Is quite certain that Ideas will bo
gained that will be worth thousands
of dollars to tho different counties and
In one year the state will get bark
from this Instruction In Improved road
ways more than the value of the hand-
same building recently given to the
state college.
It la the intention of the state col
lege to have here at thet time a num
ber of road building experts who will
deliver lectures on roed building dur
ing each mowing. The isfternoons
will be tsken up In visiting different
reeds In the county and noticing the
way in which they have been Im
proved.- .
During the session of this school
a United States government expert will
be In this county building one mile

Talking of good prisoners. Capt.
Ed. Cox. who has had fis much to do
with the handling of convicts ns any
man In the State*, said yesterday:
“Young- Rawlins, one of the Raw
llns boys, you know, connected with
that terrible afTalr of his father and
brothers down here In the wlregmwi
country, Is undoubtedly one of the
best prisoners I ever -aw. He never
S lvtfs any trouble. He knows what
** has got to do and he goes and
does It. He has grown to be a husky
lad, and Is now In good’ health. If all
tho prisoners wgro like him there
wouldn’t be much'use for the number
of guards we have.
“Speaking of guards, there hav<-
been some thirty guards killed since
the leases, to only twelve convicts.
"But going back to convicts. There
aro some white men who are awful
tough. Tuko those pickpockets down
hers from Valdosta. One of them os-
llberately put hts hand up against a
saw and whacks k off. Another cute
his foot off. and another throws him
self In the river so he can drown him
self. Such men are desperate, and
you have to watch them to keep them
from taking advantage of you.
"But a mean negro convict Is the
worst to deal with. Ho will fight'to
the flnlab. and there Is no giving up
until he lg beaten Into Insensibility.
A guard’s life fn worth nothing to
them. .1
"( wouldn’t bs surprised If there
wasn't trouble when aH the white
convicts are tsken to tho stato farm.
Thejv are some mighty mean
among them.”
