NEW YORK.
NEW YORK. Oct. 12.—While the cotton
market reacted after a sharp opening
gain today, the close was steady In tone
and prices were 8 to 12 points net higher.
Sales were eetlmated at 1W.OOO bales.
The market opened firm at an advance
of 10al7 points with the active month-
celling 11 to 17 points uet higher durli
the first few minutes on active corerii
and fresh buying for long account. whl<
appeared to be the result of better Live
rpool cable_s_ than expected and t reports
ater "cabiehowever, suggested that
Lancashire masters might not accept tho
proposition of the operatives to resume
work at a 6 cent cent reduction in wages
with the privilege of re-opening the
question at the end of three months;
the wmther mep showed no killing froet
over Sunday: there wna a renewal of
southern • selling and with, heavy profit-
taking at the advance the market eased
off during the forenoon and at one time
sold within I or 4 points of Saturday's
finals. • • ' .
As realising sales were well absorbed
the market steadied up again during the
afternoon, and the close waa within S
or 4 points of the best on the active
months. The blr estimates for tomor
row's receipts at leading ports favored
the reaction during the middle sesrlon
and the southern selling was thought to
be largely In the way of hedgea.
Receipts of cotton at the ports today
were 67.071 bales against 81.722 bales last
week and 49.920 bales ia*t year. For tha
week (estimated) 350.000 bales against
240,922 bales last week and 276,763 bales
last year.
Today’s receipts at New Orleans were
9.544 bales against 6.115 bales last year,
and at Houston 13,625 bales against 2,(61
bales last year.
