Nlaht-Riders,
The disorderly conduct grew out of
a discussion that took place at the
H&Ion depot, when the hnekmen wne
waiting In the sunshine for passengers
from the lnoomlng trains.
iBIg-Mouth John was Jowlng with
Bill Thomas about something that had
occurred some time In the past, and
which It seems nr as never settled bo-
tween them. The other hackmen lis
tened because there was nothing else
to do, tho number of passengers being
f-w.
"I seed yer w’en yer runned ter Ml*
ter Jones an' grab he grlp’n tuck *im
way fom mo an’ yer knowed he wus
lookin’ fur mel All I gotter say Is dat
It wuzzer low down trick."
"Didn’t Mister Jones call me* Cose
he did. He wuzzent gwlnoter wait
all do mnwnin’ fur yer ter tek time ter
git too Mm. Who Is you any how?
Nuffln butter night-rider no how, dat
who yer Is,"
Hackmen pick up a great deal from
the talk of passengers In their hacks,
ami Bill had heard a great den! re
cently about night-riders, but from the
fragments of talk he had not yet
found -'out what nlght-rklers <wero.
Therefore he was not inad enough with
John to loso the opportunity of learn
ing something.
“Wot yer know '-bout de«e night-
riders, John?"
"Night-riders. Dey Is da night hack-
mens, dey de night-riders."
"Go long nigger. Da night-riders
bu’n de gin houses.”
"Dunno ’bout dat, but yer know how
des« night hackmens fln’ out all de gin
houses an* drink all ds gin dey kin
git."
"I hyere de wMte folks talker 'bout
de night-riders, but taint dese night
hackmens, I know dat much. I hyere
'em say dat de night-riders sorter lak
de kukluxes an* dat dey sen* yer wud
dat dey gwlneter sot Are ter yer gin
house ef yer gin some cotton, but wot
dey do dat fur I dunno."
"Den yer doan know wotcher talkin'
’bout. Night-riders alnt nuffln' but
night hackmens, I tell yer. Wot
meanness dey doan do dey doan kpow

rider."
"Look, yer, John, min* wotcher say,
Doan yer call me er night-rider, ef yer
do I bu*s yer bald op'n.”
From the evidence. John Insisted
that BUI was nothing more than a
night-rider, and then came the fight,
They were lined five dollars each.
