greatest of th© southern cities, growing,
pushing, enterprising, progressive and all

since leaving Macon, to return to my
old home, and to be Identified In a busi
ness way with Its present and future

day. and th© famous old Lanier, with
new owners, but the same courteous
darks. M*a»rs. Borders and Wilson, will
be open today as usual to furnish food
and lodging to the wayfarer.
Without a bait, the work of Improve
ment Inaugurated by Mr. Newcomb, will
proceed just as though nothing had oc
curred. and on ths 2oth the handsomest
dining room In tha south will b# ready
for the meal service. Thla Is In keeping
with tha Intention of th* management to
conduct tbs house strictly on tne Ameri
can plan.
The firm name will b# Ktherldge. Foot
St Co., composed of Messrs. N. J. Bth-
erldge. C. C. Foor and J. H. Waterman.
This firm Is n1»o th# proprietors of the
Duval. In Jacksonville, one of the bent
known hotels In Florida, and both hotels
will now h# conducted under th* imm#
skilled management. Mr. William Foor
being In direct charge of the Lanier.
Mr. N. J. Ktherldg# has been a resi
dent of Macon for eighteen years and
was formerly connected with th# Brown
House. In this and other connections he
has made counties* friends, who travel
from ©very point of too cotnjpa##, and are
scattered the world ever. Whll* h# haa

Mr. Waterman, the other member of
firm, while not ut any time a resident
of Macon, felt as though it was his horn#,
having used It an aucb whan he waa
traveling on the road. He loves Macon
devotedly. . ,, .
Much has been sold as to the price
paid for the hotel, and not one# have the
correct figure* been given. The papers
In th# transaction show that the price
paid was $140 000. These figures show
what a magnificent place of property the
hotel 1*.
It will be pleasing news to many to
know that the owners of the Lanier will
continue the beautiful park and flower
gardens In front of th# hotel. Aa la
known, the*# street garden* were th# da-
aixn of Mr*. Newcomb, and were looked
nftcr by her. They have proven a de-
liKht. not only tn tne patrons of the ho
ld. but to th# cltteens of the city;
Mr. Newcomb will remain In Macon
with hi* family. Aa soon aa he can get
oul of the habit of looking after the ho
tel and the comfort of the guests, and

are arranging to give a German In honor

Cannibalism In Its most hideous
gulso yet survives In Tapua, as British
Now Guinea Is now officially desig
nated. and recently the Federal au
thorities on the Island had an unmis
takable proof that the wilder tribes of
the Interior delighted In feasting on
“long pig," aa tho human body Is
named by them. A lending trader, who
had lately penetrated into the Interior,
was Informed that there was a amall
village called Morohal, nenr Port Ro-
mlly, whose people had been nearly
eaten out by the Uklaravl, a wild and
dangerous tribe, who used th# place as
a kind of larder, going there when
ever they wanted bodies for a fgast.
On h!s way back down the river to the
coast the trader and his party were
attacked by «00 of the Uklaravl tribe
In twenty-seven war canoes, the whole
of the men being decked In full wnr

wa and spears. With the aid of a
friendly tribe, several hundred strong
the trader and hie party, after a bat
tle royal, secaped, and on the matter
being reported at Keroma, a Govern
ment station on tho coast, a punitive

native police, but on reaching the vil
lage of th# Uklaravl the Invading force
was unable to effect any arrests, the

about 1,100 men. After a sharp skir

protected with Iron plates, thus trans

force now consisted of the acting ad
ministrator. his secretary, twelve Gov
ernment officers and white men, and
