Wo contend that In this country u> vote Is not only a priviiefe but a duty and that the vote whkh does not express the will of tin* rnan who casts It la both a violation of prfcll**# and a xawure of duty. The opcrutlon of our fovernment rents on the will of the forests and fields; here Is fold easier won than dug in California or Alaska; her* Is better than the fountain of youth, a land nuraed by tempered winds and the life-flvlng smiles of the venerable sun; here are coasts that aJl men would peek, blessed by the wan dering summer of the sea. here la. In deed. God's country. Thir is your In heritance. Is It yours to develop, ex- *nd and enjoy? Oh no! It is in the area individual American. ,On it rests not only the safety of his person, property and privlhgi! hut the welfare of his descendants. The billot is the free- man's weapon and Ifs power Is both Immediate and continuous. It affects your business now. and makes life easier or more difficult for those who must follow you. It was never contemplated that one man or u party of men should over ride the will of the Individual und cast hl« vote contrary to his Judgment and the dli tales of ids conscience. We con* tend that In (leoicla und other Mouth- •rit states not only nre the will und Judgment of tho Individual subverted but that tho unlawful powers thus gathered up *ro used against h!r, indi vidual interests and to.the Injury of his fellow-men. In this state the wit* dom of an assembl'd people I* not In voted but their naked powers urc ex ercised nr # | by n few whose Judgment heretofore has not yielded the best re- aults. The effect in national matters has been to relegate the state to an Insignificant If no! contemptible pool development, lessen env the rate of Interest and to udd to the cost of living. The peo ple of this state have no more voice Iri the affairs of government and the of governmental policy than -- -*ose of the Philippines and so for as political power la concerned, the Individual Georgian might ns well b* In the Philippines ns nt home. He la for three years nn unconsidered non entity. in the fourth commodity and at all tlmea a political slave. If you should ask of any fair-minded man who. nt last. Is responsible for this decadence of Houthern manhood, nn will place the responsibility on th* Individual. And If you will consider for ft moment the remedy for the evils which grow out of our political situ ation, you will perceive that it lien In the handa only of the Individual. There la no reform possible with thoao whose personal Interests depend upon their ability to hold In bond the liberty of the Individual. Reform can only come from the Individual who gains strength and manhood enough to break his bonds and assert his Independence. And we contend that the manhood of thla state should realize that it has reached a limit of endurance In po litical matters. We say to you, as a fellow Georgian, that whatever may have bee n your fears, there Is today no obstacle In lha way of your emancipation other than the will of the people who nro using you for selfish Interests. If. after ma ture reflection, you fre In Judgment and In conscience committed to the belief that doctrines expressed In the Denver platform of the Democratic parly are sound, and If you have con fidence In the unsclAshnass. patriotism and ability of the candidate there se lected to put them In force, you owa It to yourself to vole for them. iRut If you district these doctrines and their exponent. Applicants for tho night achctol sought to be established by the board of education are a* yet not very nu merous. But of the fhvr who have made ap plication to Superintendent Chapman, the list shows exactly the class of young people thp night school Is In tended for. All. of. the young people are at work; all have previously at tended school, and all want the bene fit of more schooling. Advertisements are running for ^gll those who wlgh to attend the school to make this application, os upon the number thus registered depends the question whether the school will be established or not. It la to aettlo this question which cornea up every now and then that the board gives the op portunity to all young people between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age. A citizen who has been observing things, said yesterday: 'Tf All boya were alike In mental capacity, nature and disposition, as well as advantages, there would be need for all the studies In the public schools of today. Rut all boya are not alike in any of these things, and the result from hav ing certain Axed atudle* tn a high school l* that there are many of them who never Anlsh the term. There are hundreds of boys In Macon, and It Is the same everywhere, whose parents want them to hava an education, and who Are willing to skimp and make sacrifice* to this end. These parents may be unable to send their boys to higher schools, and their wish then is that they at leant go through tho high school, believing that for the ordinary walks or life this education, with that which rubbing up Against the world will give. Is sufficient. Now some boys fitted In some way for tho higher studies. By higher studies I mean thos* that are looked upon aa extra. These boys begin to lag behind their classes. Every lesson proves harder and harder. Rome of them hid rather take a whipping than get a les- Igebra, some In Latin, and some In other studies. Their minds don't run In those lines. Theft come* the truant busfnesa and Anally the dropping out of school altogether. After a while, when they get down to real life and Its work, they feel the need of the education they threw away. Rome of these will hall with delight the establishment of a night school. But should th* night school force the old nnd hated studies upon them again, then the night school la a failure, *o far a* they are concerned. According to my Idea, though T may be all wreng and too old fogy, the studies of a night school should be the three R's. allowing tho student the choice of such others aa may be taught." The board of education will be glad to hava a full night school because It can maintain one that la full at well aa one with only a few pupils. In fact, the greater the number of pupttA th# better the school. The Hat Is open. If Macon Is to hare a night school, now Is the op portunity.
