reception of the Woman's Democratic
Club at the Waldorf-Astoria today, he
woe kissed by two women. In the
presence of nearly 700 others, and
narrowly tacaned the embrace* ot a
third. Mri. Bryan was present. Mr.
Bryan displayed some embarrassment.
Mr. Bryan spoke in a hoarae and
low tone and seemed very tired.
Speaking of hla reception he said:
“I well appreciate the dlfferenoe be
tween now and the year I began. ,
When I came to New York In 11*4. i
there was a reception but there were.
not many of the women present. This
gathering today Is very gratifying in 1
that it show* an ever-growing throng i
which support* and holds to thosil
principles which have the desire for
justice a* their inherent cause.
"A good many people have come to
recognise that the reforms which are
advocated by the Democratic party are
reform* for all classes of the party.
We are coming to recognize the claims
of brotherhood and when w# grow
fuller Into that conception, a brighter
day will have dawned.
“While in this campaign the surface
things must necessarily attract a good
deal of attention, yet nevertheless. I
want to give you the assurance that
there are deeply underlying fundamen
tals as well, and of far more Im
port.
“There must be an equitable dlstrl
button of the profit* of Joint toll.
Everything costs toll that the world
uses. Somebody must produce with
toll. Here la a problem to be solved;
How are we to give to each men
that to which he 1* entitled In ratio?
"It is the plank of our platform
which deals with this subject that I
like to consider th# party** ideal. It
holds, and It holds clearly, that every
citizen should draw from society hla
proportionate reward tor his toll. I
know of nothing that will help us bet
tor to annreclato It than a recognition
of th# claims of brotherhood."
Mr. Bryan was loudly applauded.

A very Urge crowd assembled bn the
corner of Second and Cherry streets
last night to witness th# battalion
drlU of tne Hussars, Volunteers and
Floyd Rifles, commanded by Major
Thomas, and were highly entertained
by the intricate and Interesting mill-
tan* maneuver* to perfectly perform
ed by the local soldiers.
The boys turned out In full khaki
uniform, and for more than an hour
were steadily put through various evo
lutions that would render them perfect
in point of attack, when they take part
in the sham battle to take place on
Wednesday. Military Dayy at the Ma
con atate fair.
' Especially interesting was a pre
liminary drill practiced by the Macon
Volunteer*,- where. Instead of by
word of mouth the command* were
given entirely by bugle calls. This
they went through without a hitch,
the men obeying each and every com
mand sounded by the bugle with the
ease and expertnert of regulars.
The Maoon soldier bova present a
fine appearance, and with their thor
ough knowledge, and hard practice df
modern military maneuvers aro ex
pected to give * good account of them-
selves at the coming sham battle next
Wednesday.
The Gatling gun squad of the Macon
Huasars were ogaln .out having a
practice drill, and fired several rounds
to the delight of the small boy. The
Gatling gun and Ita squad will play
an important part fn the line of de
fense at the sham battle.
