He apent much of hJa time In New York, and having an entrt Into financial circles ha gathered what Information he could as to the situation. Being an observant man. nothing leaped him. Judging from what ho saw and heard, and he had the best of opportunities for both seeing and hearing, there will be a brightening tin Of things Just after the election of Tuesday, and It really does not mat ter much who Is elected. There Is an abundance of money, and the hlgh- class securities are as much In demand as aver, but It Is the unsettlcdneas of the country, caused by. a strenuous campaign, that prevents a full recov ery from the panic. And as to this panic, or depression, the south did not feel at as much at the north, and the scare Is not over there quite. But at any rate, when the ballots are count ed and the vote announced, every ves tige of the scare will vanish and money will pour out of the vaults. While In New York Mr. Dure vis ited the offices of A. B. Leach £ Co., through whose hands the financial movements for the Ocmulgee and other dams and enterprises passed through. In this house Mr. Jordan Massee has an office. Mr. Massee stands high In New York, and Is re garded as one of the most promising of young business men. He Is In touch with the moneyed men of the city, has a world of friends among them, and as Mr. Massee will confine hls Invenments and enterprises to Ma con and surrounding country, the state is ddo him much. Mr. H. R. Jaques Is In New York looking after hls son. Randolph, whose many friends In Macon will rejoice to learn Is Improving right nlong and will soon he fully recovered from hls recent sickness. He Is In the Ger man hospital In New York Personally. Mr. Dure says hls trip was a delightful one from start to fin ish. Most of the weather, even li Panada, where he expected some cold weather, was about like yesterday- In Macon. He comes back feeling ex ceedingly fit. and with more flesh than he carried away. A few days ago the court of appeals handed down a decision In a case sent up from Ocllla. to the effect that a veteran may sell near-bear without the payment of municipal license. At on#- there were seveaal who bet gan to look around {or locations, and veterans were approached with offers of partnership In the near-beer busi ness. Especially were Inducements offered to establish near-beerles In the suburbs, where heretofore no such es tabllshments wore allowed. Then again near-beer dealers we're very anxious to make trades with vet erans for tho reason that they believe the license on near-beer dealers will b* made heavy next year by the city, possibly five hundred dollars. But the opinion from the attorney general will probably deter the veter ans from engaging In the business themselves, and —obably from making any trades with others. At any rate. It Is not likely that Mscon will have any more near-beerles than at present, at least not until the beginning of the new year. By that time all matters will be settled and the exact cost of open ting a near- beery will be made known. AT THE vXRANlJ QUEER KINO OF FIRE CALLS JUT FIREMEN THROWING SAND ON E8CAPING GA8 ON f/rE DOSS NOT PUT IT 0UT A BIT » Of all the fires that havs called out the department, that of Thursday night, at 470 Orange street, was the queerest. Some of the gas company's workmen were connecting the gas main In the street to the house. They wanted to reach the meter under the porch, and had the pipe all right when they dis covered that there was no cut-off lc front, as usual, and that the gas was escaping. It was about 7 o'clock, and dark un der tho porch, so one of the negro workmen struck a match, without thinking, to see to do seme work on tho pipe, when the gas Ignited. Ho couldn’t get to the end of the pipe to plug it up, and he knew he had to do something, but Just what that some thing was he did not know. H< thought of extinguishing the flame by throwing sand on it, but the more sand he threw the more the flame spread until it was running out and all un der the house. Things looked squally and he became all the more rattled. There was more rand and more flame. Then he sent in tho fire alarm and the department responded, but in the meantime tho foreman happened to come up. and seeing the trouble dug down Into the ground and cut the pipe and plugged up the end, and the fire was out. And now chief Miller is puzzled as to how to record this fire and Its cause. It was not an explosion. It was not Incendiary, not a defective flue or any of the regular causes, and he Is at a loss what to say it was. St00 Reward, $100.
