THE GEORGIA STATE FAIR.
As Viewed By Secretary Martin V.
Calvin.
On yesterday .the weather was per
fect, every exhibit In most presentable
condition and the thoroughfares and
buildings thronged with appreciative
visitors.
It Is conceded on all aide* that the
eight county agricultural exhibits are
exceedingly attractive.
Necessarily more than a passing
glance In requisite to a thorough com
prehension of what each of tho splen
did displays stand for.
Let us look In to a few of the many
Interesting features of the exhibits.
For example: Bartow shows 27 va
rieties of apples, 14 varieties of Held
peas, 6 varieties of table peas; 26 va
rieties of corn. 14 varieties of hay, 23
varieties of sweet potatoes, and 2 va
rieties of cotton.
Rlbb— (1) 1 variety 6f apple*. 5 of
field peas, 7 of table peas, 22 of corn,
18 of hay. 20 of sweet potatoes, t of
cotton and 4 of sugarcane.
Bibb—(Lumsden) l variety of ap
ples, 4 of Held peas. 3 of tablo peas,
25 of hay and forage plants, 5 of
sweet potatoes and 8 of cotton.
Camden—3 varieties of corn,
hay. 5 of sweat potatoes, 2 of cotton,
5 of sugarcane and 7 of oranges.
Dooly—4 varieties of corn. 15 of hay,
6 of cotton and 2 of cane.
Baldwin—4 varieties of apples, 2 of
field peas, 2 of table peas, 8 of corn,
0 of hay, 5 of sweet potatoes, 5 of cot
ton and 2 of sugarenne.
Spalding—7 varieties of apples, 15
of field peas. 5 of table peas. 17 of corn.
17 of hay, 8 of sweet potatoes and 3
of cotton.
Worth—8 varieties of apples, 10 of
field peas, 20 of hay. 5 of sweet po
tatoes, 3 of cotton and 7 of sugar
cane.
A more detailed Inspection and tabu
latlon of the make-uw of each of the
displays mentioned would doubtless
show & list more striking than that
given In the foregoing paragraphs.
Take the list as It Is—what a won
drous story It tells of the possibilities
of agriculture In Georgia, Let each
person, under whose eyes this article
falls, go out to the grounds today and
go observantly through each of tjie
county agricultural exhibits. Each
such person will go down to his home
both Joyful and Justified.
We have left for another "blrdseye
view,” the collective Individual agri
cultural displays. We hope to tell of
them tomorrow. Meantime Inspect
them yourself, reader.
It la true that a group of half dozen
county agricultural exhibits constitutes
a guarantee absolute for the success
of a fair. But there are other feat
ure* which enlarge the seope of these
•mailer expositions—prominent among
these are exhibits made by manufac
turers and merchants.
A larger or finer display of buggies
has never been made at any state fair
tn Georgia In thirty years than now
greets visitors at Central City Park.
The exhibit* are direct from the fac
torles and number among them some
of the choicest specimens of handi
craft to be found In the United States.
Every vlsltlnr/farmer should Inspect
this magnificent display. There la no
vehicle In the whole bunch that la too
good or too costly for a farmer's wife
or a farmer’s daughter.
There are too few nice vehicles—
buggies and rockaways—on Georgia
farms, at best. We want to see on
Georgia farm homes a larger number
of the neatest, nattiest buggies that
are made.
No trouble about horses; they are
plentiful In number. It Is true that
there could be Introduced a good y
number of horses strictly for family
U *Georgla farmers can afford the best
buggies and tbs best horses; for every
fanner who so farms that he ’lives
•t home." has "hog and hominy"
enough and to spare—la a "prince In
Israel." _ . . _
Come to the Georgia state fair. The
gates close at I p. m., Saturday, the
7th Instant. Quick or you will mice
It and. missing It. lose very much
more than you would now be willing
to admit.
