It was at the battle of Fort Donelson. "My father," he said, "was In con ference with Admiral Foote on the ad miral's flagship, and had Just accepted a cigar from him when word came to him that the left flank of the Union forces wit being repulsed. Hurrying ashore and galloping on a fleet horse to the battlefield, he succeeded in ral- lying his forces so completely that chaos was turned Into victory, Gen. Buckner had to comply with my fath er's demand for unconditional surren der. The newspapers took up and re lated how father rushed from the war ship to the battlefield without taking Foote's cigar from his mouth, and the dispatches from the front told how father had come on to the battlefield cool and, collected and peacefully smoking a long, black cigar.' "People who read the story began sending congratulations and presents of cigars. Tens of thousands of cigars came, and my father smoked many of thehi. It made a confirmed smoker of him. But he did not smoke as many cigars as people Imagined he did. Sometimes one cigar, that he would frequently relight, would lott him from breakfast to luncheon. It waa tho fart he almost constantly held a clgnr between hla fingers that made people describe him ns n great smoker." Gen. Grant snld that hla father tried to acquire the smoking habit at West Point Just because the rules forbade smoking, but It mode him very ftlck, and when he left West Point he prac tically gave up smoking.
