Nor. 4—Central office detectives swooped down^upon a coun terfeiters’ den In a flat on the second floor of No. 458 West Fifty-sixth street, yesterday, afternoon, and took four prisoners to police headquarters, also a melting pot. several moulds and three freshly mads half-dollar pieces. The prisoners said they were Wil liam Farlow, 44 years old, a laborer, of No. 458 West Fifty-sixth street; Henry Clarke, 60. a salesman, of No. 510 West Fiftieth street; Thomas Ray, 50, a carpenter, of No. 821 East 16tth street, and Frank Bweeney. 81. a clerk, of No. C4 West Eighty-ninth street. Storekeepers In the neighborhood of the Fifty-sixth street flat complained to the police two weeks ago of being victimized with bogus half dollar* and dimes. Detectives were sent into the district and got Information which sat isfied them that the spurious coins vetye being made In the Fifty-sixth street house. When they broke Into the flat yes terday they claimed Clarke was work ing In his underclothes over a small hot stove on which there was a met ing pot which contained a white metal. Farlow was at work on the moulds. Rsy, It Is claimed, was also in the rooms. Farlow at the time the detectives broke In was Just about to remove «t 60-cent piece from a mould. The de tectives confiscated It, also two other frshly coined half-dollar pieces. The detectives said that Farlow exclaimed: “I guess you’ve got us right; It Is all up wJlh us.” While the detectives were waiting for Clarke to get into his clo*he.-« be fore stirrtlng downtown wtih I her pris oners Sweeney entered the flat. When he saw strangers there ho said he was from the New York Life Insurance Company and was looking for a man named Reilly. The detectives told him he might And Reilly down at headquarters. At headquarters Farlow tried to Save the others from being locked up by saying that he alone did the coun terfeiting. He told the detectlres. they claim, that it cost 3 cents to turn out a 60-cent piece. Friends of the man were notified and they hurried to the office of the re servation superintendent to the identify garment left behind. Those who knew the story of Hen- gerer’s recent life believe he was despondent because of business affairs. He was connected with a Buffalo car pet and furnishings house, and every thing Indicates that he came to Niag ara Palls bent on .self destruction. After Hengerer had entered the "rapWs It was impossible to rescue him. and persons at Prospect Point suffered a shock as they saw his body swept over the brink Into the gorge and on to the rocks below.
