Showing That Thera la a Sweet Llttlo
Cherub That 8ita Up Aloft to Keep
Watoh for tha Life of Poor Jaek.
One of thoee cases where man takes
a long shot at what he at the time
believes he 1» doln* the correct th'n.?,
was presented at the recorder's court
yesterday morning.
Two young while, boy*, neither of
whom oould bo over twenty, were up
on the ugly charge of larceny. They
said they were from Atlanta, and came
here In the hope of finding work, ant
failing to do ao. decided to take the
first thing that came along, and that
was to do some advertising for th«>
moving picture shows by dme'.ns
.hemsplvea up in costume* and attract
attention by blowjng one of those
honking horns. Tho horn waa bor-
iowed from tho Lamar automobile gar*
n*o. hut after'a day's work they loat
the Jc-b by reason of not being war.t-
ed any mofe. Then they wero up
against it. The horn was left at a
t store until they could find tome
"le* to advertise for. In the
mime on* of the boys went down
he fair to And something to d) to
tide over. The other tried to got w>.*k
tUl couldn't gnd aa night came on he
•iiv that there was no aupper ‘n sight,
an'1 no nlac* to-sleep. He though*,
of the horn In hla distress, and went
to tho drug store to get it. Jin then
found a nexro messenger h>/ who
wanted the horn and to him It waa
aold for seventy-five cents. With twen
ty-five cents of this money he went to
a hotel on Fourth street and got him
a bed where he alept.
In the meantime the negro miaaed
hla bicycle, and he concluded that in
some way, he didn't know why. the
young man was connected with the
theft of it, and he waa arrested. Then
his partner in the advertising business
went to the city hall to make inquiries
and he was also placed under arrest
at the Instance of the negro messen
ger boy.
When the case was called yesterday
morning, both boys told the straight
tale. He who sold the horn owned up
Ith the tears streaming down
cheeks to taking the horn and selling
it, and all about it. And he told tho
reason.
There were those In the court room
whose hearts were touched at the sight
of this young man. there at the forks
of the road, without work, without
money, without friends being among
strangers, feeling the situation In
which he was placed so kaenly that
tho tears flowed, and facing a term
on the chtingang for committing a
crime—not so helnoua a crime, per
haps. as it might have Men—to obtain
bread and a place to sleep other than
the* street on a cold night. There
were those in the court room who had
boys, and they thought of those boya
strange city, under similar cir
cumstances. And even the court felt
a tugging at the heart. He was In
wardly praying for jsome excuse to
throw sand In the eyes of Justice for
this time at least, but the negro mes
senger boy, when asked if he wanted
the young man punished, was like Shy-
lock when ho wanted hla pound of
flesh—was obdurate* and said he want
ed him punished.
But ns In many of these cases of
merit, there always comes a something,
an unexpected something, that allps
In nt the proper time. While It waa
true that tho nogro bought the horn,
the horn belonged to tho Lamar gar
age. and Bookkeeper White, of that
place, was the real prosecutor. His
heart had been touched and In spite
of the llttlo negro messenger who
wanted the young man on the gang,
he withdrew the prosecution and the
young man was set free, as was tho
other partner.
Frequenters of tho police court have
learned to distinguish the false from
the true, the wrong from tho right,
and tho shallows from tho, deeps. There
was not one of them yesterday who
would not be willing to swear that
this freed young man was not peni
tent. and there was not a mother's
son of them who hAd not fully and
freely forgiven him for this act com
mitted when he was hungry and with
out a place on which to lay hla head
for the night.

The football fans of the Hty. espe

ing forward to the game which the
Bnptlsta will play with Dahlonega here
Monday afternoon at Central City
Park.
In preparation for the gridiron con
teat with Tech on November 2$, which
may be transferred from Atlanta to
Macon, C6ach Frank Blake has the
team in great shape. Much experi
menting has been done during the
week. For Instance, It has been found
advisable to try Former at quarter,
neither Mallary nor Jameson being
able to hold the place satisfactorily.
Griffith has been token away from
center and given Farmer’s place as full
back. There will be other changes
In the line-up. but Coach Blake be
lieves that each one will strengthen
the team. One of the men, . Balter,
who showed up ao well against Geor
gia, Is expected to do much in the
succeeding games. He may be given
& trial at guarter on account of his
ability to advance tho ball and receive
fusts.
There Is some talk of the game
with Tech being changed to another
date, but the matter has not been de
elded aa yet.
The members of the Mercer team
will be the guests of Mr. Jamee Young,
