NEW YORK, Nor. The election
Is over. The country has most em
phatically declared that It wanta
peace; that It desires nothing so much
as a rest from threatened radicalism.
It neede a free chance to recover from
the Inertia begotten of last year's
panic. Of course, the result of the
election had been to a considerable ex
tent discounted In the stock market,
hence there has been no such specu
lative rebound since, as some very
hopoful but Jjiexpcrienced observers
anticipated. This, however, should
cause no disappointment; for the de
feat of radicalism has been so com
plete. and the demand for sane, sober
and honest government so emphatlo.
that far-reaching result* to all busi
ness Interests must follow. These will
not be seen at a glance and will not
come In overnight. Weeks and months
will be requisite to bring out tho
full benefleeht results of the political
tidal wave, which swept the country
on November 3. and left ft lively reali
zation of the dangers escaped. So
much for the sentimental effect of the
election which Is Important. What of
the practical effect which Is more Im
portant?
Business In Suspense.
A considerable amount of business
hnd been held In suspense for several
months, until the result was foreseen.
Many orders and many new enterprises
were temporarily pigeonholed. As In
dications of Mr. Taft's success became
more pronounced, activity was resumed
by the more venturesome spirits, hence
the event was discounted to a consid
erable extent. Yet on Important
amount of business Was undoubtedly
posinnned until the result was defi
nitely settled. Such orders and such
enterprises will from now on be un
dertaken more confidently and add to
the volume of business. And largely
because of the now and well founded
cheerfulness there Is good reason to
look for a steady recovery towards the
normal In business. Nothing would
be more unfortunate than to see tho
country plunged Into nnother period
of speculative excesses such ns brought
on the panic of 1907: and fortunately
there Is nothing of that kind In sight.
The last few presidential elections
have been followed by a considerable
rise In storks so It remains to be seen
whether this election has or hos not
been already sufficiently discount'd.
The cortdltlnns this year are so radi
cally different from previous post elec
tion porlods that little analogy can be
drawn between them, and this year
must be Judged largely by Itself. In
the first place It must be remembered
that security prices are now quite
high: especially considering the di
minished volume of business and the
lessened profits which both railroads
and Industrials have endured. The
only thing that makes securities look
chonp Just now Is ehoap money, which
combined with hopefulness are the
main factors in support of the stork
market. What stocks may do when
Interest rates advance, ns they must
with the Increasing demand for mer
cantile credits, ennnot he predicted nt
this time: but It Is evident that tho
lifting power of rh"sp money ennnot
be relied upon Indefinitely, and It must
be realized that this support will grad
ually dlsapncsr ns business Improves.
Just now money Is plentiful and cheap.
It must also he recognized that the
floating supply of stocks has been
largely concentrated In a few hands
ever slne« the panic, and that the hold
ers of those accumulations are anxious
to taka their profits and lighten their
load. This they will do on overy fa
vorable opportunity.
On the other hand, the general situa
tion Is very satisfactory. All tho
known forces are towards recupera
tion. As a result of recent house
cleaning the fln*nrtoi situation la ex
ceptionally sound; nnd there Is noth
ing In sight to prevent an unusually
prompt return of business to the nor
mal, at least In volume If not In profit.
Our railroads nre exceptionally .well
situated; some croaking managerfi to
the contrary. Recent depression has
pure
uiyowtir* ami a half-pint of good Whis
ky; shake well, and Uks a teaspoonful
evsry four hours.
It Is claimed this mixture will break up
a cold In twsnty-four hours, and cure
any cough that Is curable. Being free
from opiates and drugs, It Is far prefer*-
ble to the ordinary cough remedies and.
as It provides a quantity sufficient to
last ths average family an entlrs year, Is
as Inexpensive as It Is effective.
The necessary Ingredients can be se
cured from any good prescription drug
gist. and the mixture easily prepared. Jt
U well to remember, when having this
formula put up. that the genuine Virgin
Oil of Pine compound pure Is never sold
In bulk, but Is put for dispensing only
In half-ounca vials, each vial securely
sealed In a round wooden ease. Rank
Imitations, resembling ths genuine only
In name and style of package, are some
times offered, but these are essentially
Ineffective and often cause nausea. It is
better to purchase the Ingredients sepa
rately and prepare the mixture at home.
Re sure to get the genulno Virgin Oil of
Pine compound pure, guaranteed under
the Food and Drugs Act. June 30, 1901.

There l« every reeeon, however, to

While the election has been largol;
