BOYS’ DEBATING GLOB
HAD LIVELY SESSION
COLUMBUS, On.. Nov. 9.—The project
of cutting tho peninsula of Florida In two
hy un east un«l west ship canal connect
ing the Atlantic ocean and the Gulf of
Mexico, was the lending question today
before the convention of the Gulf Coast
Inland Wuterwuy* Association In seaaion
hero. Senator-elect D. U. Fletcher, of
Florida, tonight outlined thla plan to tho
convention In a speech which he said:
"We must meet waterway Improve-
mints in foreign countries uy
improvements "ut homo, if -wrtERS
maintain aupremacy or even standing In
markets abroad. , . .
"Thu probluin of tho cheapest and
unreal means of transportation now re
quired by tho southern, western and
northern growers Is solved when tho
United States gulf porta are opened and
the Florida ship canal on the lock system
Is constructed.
Would Shorten Rout*.
"A ship canal across the peninsula of
Florida would shoiton by about 600 miles
the routo from the Atlantic ocean 4nto
the Gulf .of Mexico, especially to the
* ulf ports of the United States, and avoid
lie dangerous navigation of the gulf
stream through tho straits <>f Florida
By this canal the commerce of thla north 1
em continent would b© placed more than
a thousand miles nearer to the Central
American rapubll*
Tlio general opinion seems to be that
a tidewater canal Is Impractlhle. *-•
tho lock canal almost a straight
across the narrowest part of the pt
aula' could be selected, passing through a
number of large lakes and using some
portions of rivers. This canal would be
a part of the contemplated Inland water
circuit of the whole of the central and
eastern _part* of the United States, east
of the Rocky Mountains.
Estimated Cost of Cinal.
"It Is estimated that the canal can b*
dug tor $60,000,000. It has been estima
ted also that more than 30.000.0QO tons
would pasa through the canal yearly,
which does not Include the enormous
traffic from Mexico. Nicaragua, Costa
Rico or certain other countries whoso
traffic would bring the tonnage, under
a reasonable estimate, to a total of
60.000.000 tons annually.
• A complete national system of Inter
coastal canals and circuit rf>f waterways
ought to be determined upon and
structed as rapidly h« possible. A ti
portwtlon crisis Is upon us.’ • .
