Nov. It—Tho greatest min© disaster
In many years in Germany occurred
Tan in 'color-Genuine Priestley WrW"?!
* was a heavy f*splonl<gi In the mine;
about 4 o'clock this morning and at*
most Immediately the mine took Are.
There wer© 380 miners working under
the ground at the time and only six
escaped without Injury. Thirty-live
were taken out slightly Injured and
thirty-seven w©r© dead when brought j
to the mouth of tho pH. The remain
ing 803 have been g/en up for lost.
The explosion, which was unusually
violent, destroyed on© of th© shafts
which bad to be partly repaired before
the rescue work could begin. The
flames and smoke proved almost In
surmountable obstacles In the early ef
fort* of the rescuing parties.
A special corps, composed of the men
who rendered suoh valuable aid In the
terrlbl* mine disaster at Courrleres,
Franco. In March of 1800. arrived upon
tho scene shortly before noon, but
were unable to enter the mine, being
forced to await the result of the de
termined efforts of th* flrman to keep
tho flames In chock.
Meantime heart-rending scenes wtr*
being enacted at th* min* when the
dead and wounded were brought to the
•urfaco. and there ware similar scenes
In the town wheje the Injured were
transported through* the street* U> the
hospital*.
At I o'clock th* flr* had made great
headway and late/ In the afternoon,
after a consultation of ths engineers,
It was decided that any further at
tempts to rescue the entombed men
were vain, owing to the Impossibility
of entering the galleries. At the same
time, an order was Issued to flood the
mine.. First reports indicated that the
accident was the Ycsult of an explo
sion of coal dust, but the statements of
the Injured men render this Improb
able and It Is not clear Just what
caused It.
