So great Is the interest In the out come of the action of the mayor and council on next Tuesday night aa to the final disposition of the Poplar street parks, that there are predlc tlons. some one way and some an other. It Is said that the aldermen stand six to six In the matter, and should the vote thus stand when the vote is taken on Tuesday night on the adoption of the recommendation of the committee on public property that the parks be grassed, the recommen dation Is lost under the rules. It Is said that the following Is the line-up. though no one can be found who Is responsible for the statement: . For grassing the.parks: Aldermen j Brunner. Brights, Chappell, Hall, Riley i and Wheeler. For allowing the parks to remain as they are: Aldermen Mayer. Adams. Snow, Robert, Swisher and Williams. None of the aldermen are willing to say Just how they will vote but rumor gives the above line-up. It Is also said that the ladles of the Ladles' Auxiliary to the Brother hood of Loromotlve Engineers, who hold their meetings In the hall of thn ItsIIwav Condurtors on Poplar street, , will take a hand In the park matter. It Is their purpose, so it was said yesterday, to follow out the Idea of the Civic Federation by having a civic federation of th*»lr own. and to do their part toward making Macon the City 'Beautiful, and as soon as the city grasses the parks, especially the one opposite their hall, to see that it Is cultivated and made attractive, after the manner In which the parka In front of the Hotel Lanier on Mulberry street are kept up by Mrs. Newcomb. There are now four propositions be fore the council touching these parks ton men. 2. To cement the surface of the parks and allow the use of them to the country teams and the cotton men. the parks to be cleaned every day and nothing to remain on them over night. 3. To take away the curbing and to pave the area with Belgian blocks the same as the other portions of the street and allow them to be used by the countrymen and cotton men. 4. To plow up and grass the parks. As each of these propositions have earnest advocates, and all have been duly championed before the council, the aldermen can tnko their choice. There will probably he a full atten dance at the next meeting of council of the advocates of these various plans, and It is also likely that avery mem ber of council will be seen and talked to before the meeting. If the report that the vote stands six to six is true, then both sides will strive hard to get one vote more. It looks like a race between the parkers and the antl-porkers for that one vote. One thing Is certain, the country teams are not using the now- plowed ground of the lower park, bor a week it has remained undisturbed, except that some fellow accustomed to crossing It at an angle for a short-cut struggles acrosa. wishing every step that he had known how rough the walking was before he ventured on It. They report that there waa much less difficulty In securing a Jury than was anticipated, and hence their *ta$r was shorter. They say that the trial was an interesting one from many standpoints. Attorney McNeil, of Ma con. the counsel for the prisoner, did all he could to save Ms man, though It Is admitted on all sides that in view of the prominence of the dead man. and the circumstances of the killing, the case waa a most serious one. During the progress of the triad a letter waa admitted In evidence that gav# an Indication as to what Elliott wanted to do. The doctor wrote a letter to his mother, beseeching her to bring him certain drugs, and gave her minute directions as to how she could get them to him, and saying that it would be necessary for him to play bug-house. This letter, so it came out In the evidence, was Intercepted by the sheriff of Troup county. Those returning from the trial say that the mother’s statement regarding her son was one of tne most touching and pathetic appeals ever made In a court room.
