The spectators, and (hire were Quite
a number, lost all respect for the bull

a bluff. Its the fit. -Bernard that Is
entitled to the blue ribbon.
It now looks as though the position
of solicitor general's special officer in
the court bouse Is to be abolished.
For years and years this position has
been held by Mr. Vic Menard, ‘tty
the election of Mr. Walter Grace to
the position of solicitor general. It has
been understood that by the fortunes
of war. Mr. Menard lost out, that is.
the position has been tendered to an
other man.
It turns out that the county commie. 1
sloners. with whom the fixing of tho
salary of the position rests, have been
Ion* contemplating the curtailing of
the expense of this place, and yeater-

It was the opinion of the commit
sloner* that them was no necessity
r a man In the position all the time;
urt being held during certain por
tions of the year, and that a per diem
method of paying for a man to do the
■ork would be economy. The ro.ittor
was thoroughly discussed by the com
missioners. nod advice taken with
County Attorney Smith, and It Was de
cided that to provide the solicitor with
special officer during theholdlng or
court and two dollars per day would
he allowed. If this Is not done. It was
thought that the sheriff could lend a
deputy to the solicitor for the court
term. Up to the present, the position
has paid one hundred dollars per
month.
While no definite action was taken
by the commissioners other than to
direct a resolution In accordance with
their wishes, it may be set down as a
settled fact that the place will be prac
tically abolished.
There were but few other matters
before the commissioners. A letter was
received from Chairman fleo. Rents
of the hoard of roudH and revenue* .of
Kmnnufl county, asking for Informn
tion as to the care and working of the
convicts In building roads. In the let
ter Mr. Rents sold: "Knowing that
you have the best roads found In the
state, and that the commissioners have
had considerable experience In han
dling convict labor wo would llko to
get your opinion." etc.
At the next meeting of the com
missioners, there will occur the elec
tion of a chairman of the board, the
clertt and a bridgekeeper.
