Nov. 17—The cotton market vu more active today with the near montha making high records for the aeason and tho close very steady at a net advance of 1 point on October arid of 8al2 points on other positions. Sales wero estimated at 200.000 balsa. The market opened steady at a de cline of 1 point on December, but gen erally 2a3 points higher and ruled steady to Arm all day. Thero was a little local selling of December at the start, but these offerings wero soon withdrawn nnd December led the ad vance on covering by shorts, who seem ed to be rendered very unoasy by the talk of a concentrated long Inter est, the small stock, and the approach of the first December notice day with out any sign of liquidation. Reports of steadier Interior epot holders were also an Influence, while the buying of nosr months by some of tho larger spot Interests suggested that a bullish revision of differences at tho meeting of tho local committee tomorrow was looked for. At any rate December sold tin 4o 925 during the late trading or 16 points higher, the advance being followed, although rather slowly at time*, by the later positions on a grad ually broadening demnnd from outside sources. The close was a little oft from the best on realising. NEW YORK. Nov. 17.—The charac ter of today’s stock market was much the same as that of yesterday. The fpotty and irregular movements result ed in much confusion of mind on the part of those who were attempting to dlRcern significance of the conflcttng action of different stocks at the same time. The current of the prleo move- ment was not consistent at any time during the day. The decreased animation of the spec- ulatlon was attributed In a general way to an excess of caution, to the ex tensive rise already achieved, which has reduced tho rate of the Income yield on everything traded In. The stocks for upward movement today, however, wer© amongst those which have suffered from fears of dividend reductions In the past and which ore now responding apparently to Increas ed confidence In the maintenance of present dividend rates. .Conferences of trofTIc officials to dlscusa proposed freight advances also affected theso stocks. Another group that was affected as a class today wasj that of low priced railroads especially those In the hands of receivers. A movement of more general Influence was that In the Harrlman and HIK groups of stocks, Union Pacific as usual, absorbed a largo proportion of the day’s dealings. Its rise today to 183 5-8 was accompanied by revived rumors of a pending financial plan ln^ had alternate periods of heaviness and strength. This wss.
