GENERAL MANAGER HUFF WRITES
SCORCHING CARD FROM SICK BED
HE DOES NOT LIKE THE SUGGES
TION THAT THE PAID-IN CAPI
TAL OF THE ASSOCIATION BE
FURTHER IMPAIRED BY A DI
VIDE BETWEEN THE PRINCIPAL
OFFICER8.
To the Editor of Tho Telegraph:—
Wer© you present at the meeting of
the stockholders of the Maeoh Geor
gia State Fair Association lfcst Mon
day night when the attempted raid
was mad# on the treasury of that
company?
Can It be possible that what I read
In the report made of that meeting Is
true? Can It bo possible that at a
meeting of the directors previously
held a motion prevailed that .Johes,
MoKenny. Harris and Huff should each
be paid the sum of flvo hundred dol
lars for their valuable services?
Permit me to ssy that from the
very Inception of this fair business,
nothing was more dearly, definitely
and distinctly understood than that
the president, tho secretary, the treas-
urer and the general manager Should
after all the bluster; bragging and
Iblowing indulged In privately and pub-1
Holy about this patriotic, free-pervlce
business that any one of tlio above
named officials have allowed them
selves to be made a party directly or
Indirectly to thla attempted "hold-up.'*
Surely there must be some mis
take about thla thing. An compared
with any and other attempts at graft
that may have been made by the of
ficials of the fair, this Ir. tho most
astounding of all yet reported to me.
How glad I am to sco from the re-
port In your paper that In voting on
this proposed public "rake-off," the
stockholders were about two to one
against the outrage. I thank every
man present at that meeting who
spoke agslnst the proposed gouge.
When the office of general manager
of the fair was tendered me. I ac
cepted It on the expressed condition
that my services would be given free
of charge. I stand by my contract.
Let every other man be made to do the
name thing. Any other action apart
from this would be disgraceful. A
change of policy at this lime would be
dishonest. I write this much without
regard to the financial chndltlon of
the Macon fair association and with
out reference to the amount and char
acter of the services rendered by any
body.
If there Is a man In or about Ma
con who devoted half the tlmo, per
formed half the hnrd work, or mad#
half the sacrifices that I did for the
success of the fair, let him stand up
and be heard from. If there Is no
such man. then let all other men hold
their peace and content themselves
with such honors as Justly belong to
them. There Is glory enough for all
who deserve It.
While I may-expose a vanity I will
not conceal a fact, when I say that.
If my services ns general manager of
the fair were to he measured by dol
lars and cents, the sum of fivo hun
dred dollars would be regarded as poor
compensation. But with mo It Is not
a question of money
w __ .As thlH Is the
fifth state fair with which my name
has been connected as general man
ager. and. as each and all of these
debts, It Is at least something for me
to feel proud of. The cry of unpaid
premiums has never beeh heard at the
close of any fair managed by me. You
may call thla luck or chance or acci
dent, or whatever else you please. It
Is nothing more than the outcome of
determined effort, th# pride of en
deavor. the love of aucceta. or what.
Is ‘better still—the genius of hard
work. In a word—It’s all In knowing
how.
» I am doubly mortified to Me from
aomo of the arguments made In favor
of distributing two thousand dollarn
of the stockholders’ money among a
favored few. that five hundred doUgrs
of it should be paid to Mr. Harris and
myself, because we needed It. Alas,
for the poverty of that argument! I
can’t speak for Mr. Harris, but, so far
as my needs are concerned, they do
not enter Into thla question at all.
Neither tho extremity of misfortune
nor the exigencies growing out of bad
luck will ever make me a beggar at
the door of a Macon fair association.
Not a dollar was ever paid me for my
services In the conduct and manage
ment of former state fairs. and It is too
late now for me to break the proud
record by being made the "needy"
beneficiary of the fair Just cloaed. I
found full satisfaction and complete
compensation for all my labor In the
pleasure It gave me to pull together
a creditable fair at the pine? where
once centered the pride and marked
the glory of my younger and better
days—Central City Park. That I
should at last be taken from tlmtsp.it
a cripple Is something I do not un
derstand.

"UNITED STATES INDIAN BAND."
Lawrence (Ken.) Journal.—Last even
ing's part on the program was a sacred
concert by the Wheelock Indian Band.
The tent was filled, standing room In ell
the aisles between the chairs, and about
the edges was occupied to the limit, and
as far away as the music could heard
were gathered scores of listeners who
could not get near the tent. Tho concert
by the band was a magnificent one. It
was perfect music rendered In a delight
ful manner, by a band of professional
merit with a leader of exceptional ability.
