They were talking of Thanksgiving,
chestnut-fed turkles. such oa are sent
every year to th© president of the
United States, bo he republican or
Democrat, by some old Vermont farm
er. and of all the things that come to
the thanksgiving table* when Farmer
Leon Dure said a funny thing hap
pened that morning. .His man at the
farm had taken him out to a Uttle
grove back of the house and said he
had dlacovered a chestnut tree load
ed with chestnuts. Farmer Dure said
he was only an amateur, but he’d be
homswoggted If he didn't know better
than hla man. for Instead of chest
nut* tfte tree# bore buckeyes. He
knew that because he knew a man
once who carried a buckeye in hla
pocket ever so long to curs his rheu
matism.
Then Mr. Dick Jordan aald that
when he waa up In Virginia last sum
mer he saw a buckeye tree as big as
that big water-oak out there In the
park. This was daaslngly large, be
cause every farmer aa well aa echos!-
boy knosre that the buckeye tree It a
dwarf tree.
"They tell ms," said Mr. Hugh
Washington, "that up them In Ohio
the buckeye tree grows In such large
quantities that they call the state the
Buckeye State."'
Then Mr. Jordan drew from his
pocket the hard dark seed of the lotus
flower, hla luck pl«e*. "Tnat'a my
cure for all Hla" said he. land I have
only to dream with tnie in my pockat
to wander to the. land of the lotus-
eaters and all troubles vanish."
Then they parted.
