FOUND BULLET IN PLANK
GUT FROM OLD PINE TREE
Into Which the Bullot Was Fired Many
Years Ago.
In working up some lumber yester
day at the Massce-Fclton Lumber Cot
Plant. Mr. Wesley Lewis, one of the
carpenters, came across a pine plank
cut from near the heart of a tree that
contained a carbine bullet.
It was evident that when the tn»6
was young, this bullet was fired Into
It. by accident or design, and the tree
grew up and covered It, enclosing It
completely. Even the big saw of the
sawmills had failed to find It, but it
developed as Mr. Lewis ran his plnnei
over it.
Of court* there is no way of telling
from whence the plank came as the
company gets Its lumber from many
sawmills located all over the country,
but the character of the bullet would
indicate that It was fired from a car
bine, but whether during the Far or
after It cannot be told.

FLOCK OF WILD GEESE
ON WAY SOUTHWARD
No Doubts Now a« to the Cold Weather
Coming This Way.
A flock of wild gocse was seen flying
over the city early yesterday morn
ing.
While Hupt- Callaway was at the city
stockade yesterday morning, getting
the street hands out, his attention was
called to the flock over heed, flying
southward. They were low enough for
their honks to be hetrd distinctly and
to be counted. They were in the usual
wedge shape, and there were just thlr-
ty of them, and thoy were traveling at
apparently * moderate rate of speed.
Thta is taken as en evidence of the
colder weather coming, the geese seek
ing a wanner climate.

One Plain Drunk And a Little 8crap of
a Black Rascal.
A nl-beer drunk who had not yet re
covered sufficiently to be tried, and a
little ntne-year-old negro charged with
stealing a bicycle, furnlulu-ii .ill the
material for the recorder to work on
yesterday morning.
The nl-bccred man said that he
wouldn't state positively that he was
guilty, though he did take some of the
four-per-cent stuff. He was found out
on Hasel street lying on the grass
about as drunk as men get not to be
dead, and when carried to the ela
tion house It was found that he had
forty-flve dollars In his pockets. If
some burglar had known this he would
never have entered a house that night.
Case continued.
The negro boy was turned ovsr to

The Older the Colder.
"Where did you get your whisky?''
This question has been askckl So
many times In court, whenever a plain
drunk stands up before the bar, that
the old rounders frame up an answer
before hand, and In nine out of tsu
cases the answer comes back, "twamt
whiskey, It was nl-beer." or "a friend
gave me a drink out of a bottle."
But being Tom Broadax's first ap
pearance he wgs not expecting the
question, and hence had no answer
ready. Tom, It seems. Is so old that
he has no. Ides, whether ho Is fifty or
one hundred, but he compromises on
seventy-five. Ho was found colled UP
under a doorstep by Officer Jessup
lato Monday night, and as the police
are keeping a sharp lookout for bur
glars, ho was taken out of his htdlng
placo and sent to tho pollco station.
The officer smelt liquor on him, and
there was hardly any doubt In ids
mind as to Tom's being drunk. Then the
court wanted to know the particu
lars.

Tho officer sold the old negro had
evidently told the truth, because he
found an empty bottle under the door
step when they pulled him. The court
accepted the statement that the older
a man gets the colder he gets or rather
he feels the cold more acutely, and
told the old man to go, but In the fu
ture to avoid doorsteps.
