Am per arrangement, the special com* mlttee. composed of Aldermen Riley. Wheeler. Mayer. Brunner. Chappell and Robert, met with General Manager Molao and Bupt. Harlan, of the Central, at the mavor'e office yesterday afternoon at f o'clock, and had with them complete maps of the locality In which the grants were wanted, and later, with City Attor ney Hall and City Engineer Wilcox, went over the ground. After a thorough dlacuaalon and exam ination, the committee decided to reoom* mend to coundl the granting of the pe tition. With the perty were representatives of the Georgia Ixian A Trust Company, whose protest against dosing a portion of Tupelo street was reed at the meeting of council. These representatives stated that after looking over the situation there did not appear any probable detri ment to their property at present, and withdrew thalr objection tentatively. In fixing a price for the land wanted, the committee decided that It should be the same In proportion to that paid for the land on which their present new shops are kacated. This wUl make the price $102. With thla recommendation of the mlttee. which was unanimous, and the known sentiment of the other members of council, It may be put down that the K tltfon la granted. An ordinance cm- adng the tarms. granta and conditions will now he drawn and passed by coun- C General Manager Molae arrived In the city yesterday morning In hla private car. He came to Macon to confer with the council committee and explain to them anything that might not be understood In the petition. From him some Interesting Information was obtained as to the proposed Improve- manta. It Is the desire of the company to have at Macon such modern equipped ships that all the heavy repairing can he dene to locomotlvea and cars in the quickest possible time. It ft estimated that when tbe proposed additional ahopa are built, there will be ne necessity of further extension for the next tin years. The shops will be bnUt with thla In view. Thy.present round house, the moat com modious and moat complete In tire ooun- try, wee erected on this ld«. and U (a there to serve for many rears. No definite figures can be given as to the ooet of the Improvements. When the present shops were planned. It was * spend about one million dol- snops at *' : Macon, and It was sxpectsd Intended then to cover all the land pur chased from the city. Tbe financial de pression came, and then It was thought that only about a quarter of a million could be spent, and the work began. The, work grew and at nearly every step some- expense grew apace, until Instead spending two hundred and fifty thousand the present Improvements cost the com pany alx hundred and one thousand dol lars. This, of courts. Included the pur^ chase of the land from the city and the private parties whose landa were neoia- sery for the plans to be carried out. Therefore, while It la Intended that the completion of the original plane by build ing the additional shops on the land oi the old ahopa and that acquired yesterday will cost about two hundred and thousand dollars, It may coat twice much before the work la finished. As to the benefits to the city from the Increased ahopa and Improvements, ar Idea may be gained from the payroll The shop payroll for* the paet montj amounted to $41,002. As the force w*l be doubled, the payroll will be Increased at leaat to $82,000. with the chances of It being one hundred thoumnd dollars, paid out to employes and every dollar put Into circulation among the people of Macon. These shops will do the heavy repair ing and other work for the entire ays tem of the Central. They will be aa large aa the I* A X. ahopa at Louisville, which now enjoy the distinction of being the finest and largest railroad ahopa In tha south.
