RATE OF SPEED WAS DISCUSSED Without A 8p#*dometer C*n a Penon Toll How. fast an AutomobUs la Driven Through the City—Caio At Recorder's Court. “How fast doe* an automobile go fa the city 7“ H This question was up for discussion yesterday-morning before the recorder. Officer Bulllngton charged a negro chauffeur named Sam Land with ex ceeding the speed limit, though It was as much for turning loose the boiler- factory etetom gong as for anything Oise. The officer said that It was Just aft er the theater had closed, and when there were a number of peoplo on Mul berry street, and that he was com plained to by a number of citizens that the car of Juggernaut was rolling down the street crushing the lives and split ting the ears of any amount of people whose lives were worth various amounts, from thirty cOnts to as many thousands of dollars. Then the officer hastened to Second street only to see the engine of de struction with Its big rear headlights shining like the eyes of some monster fast disappearing down Second street, with the multitude looking on with mingled fear and amusement• I In a few mlhutes the thing came back and darted with all the swiftness back and darted with ail the swiftness of a meteor and Its brilliancy around King A Ollphant’s corner, and then shoot up Mulberry like the fash of merry lightning. In a little while the Thing came rolling down -Mulberry and the officer, having Oaught hi*, breath, gavo Mm a summons. The officer said the car ran around the cornet* at a speed of about eight or ten miles an hour, but that It had gone up Mulberry at the rate of fifteen or twenty miles an hour. Mr. Jesse Harris was the attorney In the case, and be tried With all his might to shake the testimony of the officer as to tho speed, but was unsuccessful. It was eight of ten miles going round the corner, and fifteen or twenty go- ln gup Mulberry, and that was all there was to It. not a mile more or a mile less. Then Mr. Harris wanted to know how the officer knew tho dif ference between an automobile funning at the rate of eight miles an hour and one going at the rate of twenty. The officer knew It. There were several things by which he knew the differ ence. the mpldlty of the exhaust was one of them. Another witness corroborated what ths officer had sftld Then Mr. Ben L. Jones wfci/ called In as a witness. He began to answer questions as to speed and now fast a car could go, how fast It ever went, how fast he had hla to go. and all about It until he asked If he was on told a great deal. With his big car the engine worked faster than the au tomobile could go. When the <firwrt* going alow the honker honked loudest Ho sal^. In answer to the question. thAt hla ear could run eighty-eight miles an hour, and ho himself had been in It Vtfien It was cutting off miles at the rate of seventy-seven, whereat the court shuddered. Summed up, there was no -way to tell how fast the Thing was going except by the speedometer nnd the officer didn’t see that, Mr. Jones didn’t sea It, and the negro chauffeur didn’t sea It It was taken for granted that with the noise of the exhaust and the hon ker and the complaints of tho people, that the Thing was going faster than the regulation eight miles un hour, and Snm was fined five dollars. THEY SAY ROY BATES HAS YOUNQ MAN 18 CHARGED WITH BREAKING HIS STEPFATHER'S FACE WITH A TEACUP. The esse of Roy Bates, charged with fighting, at ths recorder's court yss trrday momlng was not without In terest. It was In evidence that Bates and hla wife live In the same house In Lake City, on ths Bast Macon fide, With his stepfather. C. H. Smith, and family. Thursday morning at break fast. Bates lingered long and then I began to abuse hie stepfather. One word brought on another until Smith I shook hla linger In Rites' fact) nnd Itold him to shut up. Then Bates picked up a jmp from the table and threw It at Smith, atrlklng him In the forehead and cutting gashes that required him to go to the hospital and has his Injuries wlressed. With his face bandaged up and strips of piss ter, hla fade had the appearance of a death's head. iBntes said that he had been worried a great deal recently. He lost his baby a week ago, and he was worried over the wav his mother's family had been reduced from a well-to-do-condl- tton to a condition of absolute poverty, the mother and little slater being com pelled to work. It was a pitiful tate he told. • Then Supt. Abercrombie, of the Bibb Mill, threw light on the matter. He ssld that ao far an work was con cerned, Bates was a good hand, but that the death of his baby, and the fact that ho was never bright, had caused not only friction among the mill hands where ho worked, but at home, 4tid ha thought Bates should be examined as to his sanity. This opinion of the superintendent Was sub- stantiated by Detective Harrison, Who said ho had known Bates for the past ten years, nhd that ho was not consld- “•“ed bright. It sefms that Bates hns hallucina tions at times, and then It imagines that his family has gone to the dogi.<atld that he has to war* to keep the wolf from the door of his mother nnd hla slater. The recorder thought, from the evi dence. that Batra should be examined on a writ of lunacy, and It was so or dered. “Have you tried CltnehfieM, Wrlto the Southern BalSs Agency of the Clinchfald Coal Corporation, Char lotte, N.
