DRUNKEN NEGRO CREATES STIR BY
HANGING HIMSELF IN AN AP
PLE TREE.
ATHENS, Ga.. Dec. 18.—Athens had a
lynching yesterday. The police wet*
called to the Newtown settlement to ar
rest a drunken roan, and after search
ing some time for him, found Alox
Smith, colored, hanging in an apple tree.
No one had witnessed the lynch.ng and
the crime committed by the negro was
nothing worse than that of getting drunk.
John Barleycorn had been the execution
er. The negro in rambling around had
jammed his head between two limbs of
I the apple tree and could not get out.
Thero he was hanging with his toes Just
touching the ground. Had tho officer*
arrived a little later he would have been
dead. They took him- down and curried
him to the city prison and he will pay
the ordinary line for a plain drunk.
Walker Gets Commission.
ATHENS. Ga.. Dec. II.—Hon. Cllffl M.
Walker, the newly-clected solicitor gen
eral of tho western circuit, has received
his commission,' which takes oltect on
Jan. 1. Ho was in Atlanta yesterday and
was sworn in by Judge C. H. Brand. Mr.
Walker will appear at his first court on
the fourth Monday In January at Wat-
ktnsvHlo. His friends are predicting for
him a brilliant success as solicitor gen
eral. ,
Seek to Sat Aside Will. '
ATHENS. Ga.. Dec. 15.—Judge Brand
heard at chambers yesterday the case of
Lula T. Lyon and Cora at. Austell vs. M.
L. Mobley, administrator of H. L
Spencer, deceased. The plaintiffs are
seeking to set aside the will of the de
ceased and ere making a strong effort to
show that It should be held to be the
genuine will of the deceased. Tho|

Whitehead, who lost $200 and $1,000 in
Jewels at Winder a few nights since,

Case Is Dismissed.
ATHENS. Go.. Dec. 15.—Yesterday af
ternoon the committal trial of Shep Har
ris. colored, chnrged with attempted bur
glary. waa concluded and tho negro was
dismissed. This case was brought
agnlnst tho negro, ho being charged with
having entered the room of a young lady
nt the State Normal School recently.
Tho young lady awoke and the negro
grabbed her by the throat She scream
ed and ho ran. The evidence waa insuf
ficient to identify Shep Harris as the
negro, although the young lady believes
ho Is the guilty party. Immediately after
being released by tho court Harris, on
the advice of his counsel, left Athens on
the first train.

iner, of Sparta, has been appointed parol*
clerk by the state prison commission, and
tho appointment marks tho beginning of
the practical application of the new law,
by which prisoner* may be released from
tho penitentiary on trial.
Mr. Gardiner has done special work
for the commission on various occasions
and Is similar to a large extent with the
state ponltentlary. He is fitted by tal
lion of Its operation in cnnrge. It will
lia the duty of tho clerk to investigate
applications that are made for parole,
to keep a reco;tf of all cusch 'and. Hee
that released prisoners comply with the
rulos and regulations after being set
free.
No ono has yet been paroled, but a
