People wonder sometimes how ne groes manage to pay the heavy fines sometimes Imposed on them by tho re corder for their fights and disorderly conduct. A case tried by the recorder yesterday furnished ono instance of how it is dohe.' Officer Ed Burke arrested a negro named John Battle on tho chargo of fighting, the report being made by a woman named Carrie Bullard. Tho case was this: John had been boarding with a wo man named Lula Brown for the past four years, and had been such a star Ing to his own statement ho went to his boarding houso hungry Monday night, and found that Lula, the land lady, had gone out calling. Carrie, on whom she called, said that Lula called on her. but was suffering so with a headache and appearing to bo very sick, she sat down In a chair and went to sleep. Thinking she was too sick to bo sitting asleep In a chair, Carrie mado her lie down on the bed. About supper timo John came and ask ed if Lula was there. She was. and that she was sick in bed. John waited for no invitation but rushed into tho room and pul Ted Lula out of tho bed and slapped her. There was no conflict |n the testi mony, but John said he was not mad and was only hungry, and meant n.i harm. Ho tried to smile it off with the recorder as merely a playful prank. The recorder, however, saw no fun In It and fined John fifteen dollars. As John was being led away by the officer ho yelled to Lula to go pawn his clothes quick and get him out. And Lula will gather up his clothes and raise the fifteen dollars. WORKS WONDERS A Wonderful Compound— Cures Files, Eczema, Skin Itching, Skin Eruptions, Cuts and Bhiises.
