ATLANTA, Ojl. Dec. 23-ClrciAar N<». X of ih*’ Georgia Mint© board of entomology Imx elicited many Inqulr- Ion al thn off leu of state entomoioglHt un to the meritn of thn different aoluble oil aculo deetroyer d'actuieed therein. In view of the apparent tnlsunder- Htnndlng of the piuvinte «»f th'x elnu- lar, a word of explanation )m thoudhl to bo odvlMble. A* wait act forth In the Introduc tion to the circular, the data Hubrnlt- t»*d wax nimply that obtained from one year's text of the materials. In m* sense was un> p.irt <»f It to be con- atrued as a recommendation for a par ticular soluble oP or oils. Hill o tho publication bf circular No. h, tte de- I'aiiim-nt has duplicated the experi ments mentioned therein, and by an other year wilt b© in ponltlon to give more positive Information on the sub ject. Until that time, however, the purchaser must exercise h s own Judg ment na Co the superiority of one ma terial over another. Orchwkd.ata in tending to use «olliable oils In spray ing for scale have, of course, the priv ilege of choosing the oil which they think la the most superior. Until the experiments now being conducted by the department of entomology are completed, there Is not sufficient evi dence to make worthy comparisons. The oils mentioned In circular No. 8 are: Soluble petroleum and kll-o.scale, both manufactured by tho Thomsen ('hemleal Company. Baltimore. MU.; Scaleclde. manufactured by tho n. G. !»ratt Company, New York; Target Brand, undo by the American Horti cultural Distributing Co., Martlnsburg, \V. V.i.. and two acale inaoctlddcs manufactured at Orlamlo, Fla., by the J. Hcharr Insecllcldo Co. The Thomsen Chemical Company, manufacturers and distributors of kil o-scale and soluble petroleum, have concluded that It la not irafe to use these preparat'ons on tre»n for San Jose scale, and no longer recommend their use as a scale remedy. The Target brand now manufactured Is an entirely different product front that made f n 1507. This being true, the data on Target brand contained In circular No. 8 hits no reference to the present output which Is entirely d'fft rent ' from the product with which we • xoorlmcnted last yfcor. It may b* a better product than that of 1007, and It may be Inferior, but any merit that attaches itself to Target brand as made In the past years can have no connection with the oil made a present, Prepared L'me Sulphur, manufactur •d by the Thomsen Chemical Com pany. 'Baltimore, and briefly touched In circular No. I. gives promise of con- (tolling scale successfully. As yet. however, the department is not in a position to recommend Drops red Lime Sulphur *ny mere than It can the o'l*. It U being used In the state this fall on quite a large scale, an^ thne will be amide opportunities next year to Judge what It h.<a accomplished. At the pr-'wnt writing It scents to glv promise of succcsa. Ip view of the uncertain results from #te use of oils and In view of the fact that It would he unsafe to recommend Prepared Lime tiiffpnur or any other insecticide from a single test, the de- partm-mt atUI rccomnionda the home made !lta# and sulrhnraa the very best remedy now known for Ban Jose scale. Those dcsiring to* obtain an insecti cide that dtatreva scale, will tlnd the 1 veiled lime and sulphur productive of the best results, and will find alto that It Is an excellent fungicide. Bulle tin No. 21 contains directions for the prvpsrat.on of homo-made lime, and sulphur, and it can be obtained from the state entomologist uVon request* WITH $200 IN MONEY CONTRACTOR LEAVES HOME New nicmh-rs are being added to the Macon Chamber oi Commerce every day, and Secretary Harry Burns and tho members of the com mittee on membership are making every possible effort to increase thejoffL* ... w list of new members in order thar i sp«»ctIona rcauirc*' on this amount of at the beginning of the new year the; work wc* 4.S42.
