Phone 951 ON PARKS AND PUB._PROPERTY Council Committee On Parks And Public Property Make An Interesting Report D of Their Year’s Transactions. Alderman Brunner, chairman of the committee on public property, has made the following report to tho mayor and council: Macon, Ga., Dec. 21, 1908. To tho Hon. Mayor and Council of the City of Macon. Gentlemen—Tho committee on public property und parks submit herewith their report of the operations of this depart* meat for the pust twelve months: Central City Park. Total appropriation $1,020.00. This In cludes the keeper’s salary and labor. The park and grounds have been kept in ex cellent condition, and fairly within this appropriation. Wo would recommend that either tho duties of patk keeper be enlarged, or tho office of keeper of parks created, thereby enlurglng his scope of usefulness, embracing the care of all tho parks.. This past year the* park keeper, whose duties hcrctoforo have been con fined solely to the care of Central City Park, has very cheerfully looked after the up-town parks and kept them in most beautiful order with the assistance of two helpers, and wo think this idea should either bo carried out, or tho up town porks turned over to tho -foreman of streets, and some industrious man ap pointed for a nominal salary to look after Central City Park; our opinion being that un ordinarily industrious man, with one inulo and wagon, can keep the park In perfect order at all times.. Public Buildings. We carry n total Insurance on all of the public buildings of $49,150, tho prem ium being $1,100.50. a Blight- Increase ovci tho appropriation for this purpose. The bulk or this Insurance is for a period of three years, except the building at the Central City Park, which can only be in sured for one year. Wo think that an appropriation of $500.00 will bo amply sufficient to pay the premiums for the in coming year. The appropraltlon for re pairs on public buildings. $1,000.00. We expended in repairs the sum of $724.47. Nearly uil of the buildings are sadly In need of repair. . . • The contemplated work on the aud!to< rlum should.be put through at once., as it is very badly needed. The cost would be in the neighborhood of $100. No. 1 engine houso is in very bad shape. Tho floor of the front porch is rotten, is leaking badiy tf the rear brick wall of the building is*cracked and is settling down, and would recommend that immediate attention be given to these needed repairs, and a one-8tory ex tension on the rear of the building, af fording more room for tho engine and heaters, and a proper space for storing forage and coal, as they have none what ever for cither of these articles. It Is estimated it will cost $1,000.00 to mgko this addition and repairs. No. 2 engine house is in very bad con dition with regards to the girders which support the second floor; ono of them in particular has only about one-fourth Inch bearing on its support and is liable to slip out at any time. Tho roof of this houso needs some repairs and tho whole ex terior should bo painted. It will require an expenditure of about $250.00 to put this houso in shnpe. Tho wooden addition to No. 4 engine house should be removed and replaced by a brickmnn, somo painting nnd a little brick work to put this building In condl lion at an estimated cost of $850/10. All other buildings owned by tho city aro in fair condition. Tho purchasing .agent’s report shows an expenditure of $9,251.22 Tho appropriation was only 3,020.00 Showing an expenditure In ex cess of appropriation $6,231.22 Tho following amounts expended were not included or contemplated In tho ori ginal* appropriation: For extra labor, lawn mower and tools of vnrious kinds, disin fectants. etc $ 925.30 Painting of Fifth street bridge,. 1,065.30 Repairs Central City Park for the fair 2,026.56 Build Inga and fenco of stockade. 2,328.90 Total. ,....$6,340.12 We have received for rentals of department oats vnlued at $ 800.00 At a cost not exceeding $200. With these facts and figures It shows that thin department makes a better showing than the mcro figures of the city oleik would indicate, und instead of the department having seemingly ex pended three times its appropriation. It lias in fact remained within the appro priation, by reason of the authorised ex penditure of $6,346.12 for improvements not contemplated at the time of tho ori ginal appropriation, which deducted'from the total expenditure of $9,251.22, would give us a hnlancc of $114.90. not Includ ing the $1,200.00 in oats nnd hay which this department turned over to the street department, nor tho $865.00 collected from renters tuuj sale of scrap iron- for which tlio public property department Is entitled to credit. THEY WANT TO KNOW IF GOLD-FISH SLEEP DRUG CLERKS AT TAYLOR*BAYNE’8 SAY THAT THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN THE FINNY FELLOW8 WITH THEIR EYE8 CLOSED. TECH GLEE CLUB AT Do gold fish sleep? This is a question that just now is con siderably worrying Messrs. Alf Mack, Julian Peacock nnd Jesse Mitchell, the popular clerks at tho Taylor-Uayne drug store. They contend that these particu lar members or the finny tribe never sleep, even if other fish sometimes do, but they are anxious to know If tiicy arc correct in the matter. There is a largo tank filled with gold fish nt Taylor-Bayne’s nnd there is quite a demand for them. Yesterday a pros pective customer, who had never owned a gold fish and consequently knew very lit tle about them, asked Mr. Mack "when did they sleep." 'He could not answer, and neither could his confreres. A' dismissing the mutter at length, they JH rived at the decision that gold fish, like Taylor-Bayne’s "never sleep." Messrs. Mack and Mitchell are on duty in the day time. They say that they have never seen a gold fish sleeping, not even taking a brief nap or dozing. Mr. Peacock works at night and has plenty of time to observe tho tank of finny fel lows. He is equally positive that from six p. m. to six il m. the fish never close their eyes. The three drug clerks are much wrought up over the matter and have broached it to many of their friends, co fish dealers, doctors nnd others. They liavo even consulted the encyclopedias. And they aro exactly where they started, not a bit more en lightened. It Is stated that perhaps the gold fish sleep with their eyea open, sines they are often seen to remain motionless In the water for two or three minutes at a time, but never longer than that. Others declare tliat If the iar or tank Is placed In a dark room, the fish will rest his body upon the bottom and sleep the sleep of the just. But no one can be found who has ever seen one of them In the arms of Morpheus. Information on the by Mi The best Xmas gift for lady or o«ntl«* Man would b* fthoei, Parks A Cvsritt, tho place.
