The negro ran just an Mr. Dearing came upon the scene and made good bis escape. The police believe they have clues that may lead to the arrest of the criminal. Death of Mr. Jno. R. Crawford This morning at htn home In Bar- barsvllle, just outside this city, oc curred the sudden death of J »ltn R. Crawford, one of the oldest merchants of the county. Z4.— News of the 1 loss off Hog Island on Wednesday of the three-masted schooner Jeanle Llppltt and the drowning of Capt. Robinson and fire members of tbe ship's crew, was brought to Old Point this morning by Andrew Jorgensen, the sole sur vivor of the wreck, who was picked up at sea Wednesday afternoon by the American steamship Ravens- craig, Capt. Johnson. The Llppltt was bound up the coast from Jacksonville, Kla., for New York with a cargo of lumber. She ran Into the recent heav, northeast gale off Cape Charles on Tuesday afternoon, and after takfns aboard considerable water and sus taining much damage to tbe bull, she ran on a shoal off Hog Island and soon went to pieces. Crew Wnvhed Overboard. Capt. Robinson and four men were washed overboard and drowned when the ship struck. Jor gensen and the other seamen of the crew also were washed over board, but succeeded In lashing themselves to a piece'of wreckage The other seamen became exhausted from cold and died before the Ra- vonscraig could reach port. The men were picked up oft Winter quarter lightship Wednesday af ternoon. The Ravenscratg’s mac chinery became disabled during the storm and was returning here for repairs when the men were sighted. The Hippltt was owned by Coro- well & Thurlow of Boston, and was built at Boston in 1880. She was of 748 tonnage. Fn.. detectives employed by the league to give tbe city a municipal house cleaning, whether all the Kinks selected as deposi tories contributed to this fund has not been established. Officers of but one have so far been arrested and ate charg ed with the payment of only 117.640 of the alleged bribery fund.
