J NEW YORK. Dec. *4.—The Interest In
the sugar market during the past week
has centered about the movement of the
new Cubnn crop, which being earlier than
last year, and according to preliminary
estimates larger. Is making dally new
low price levels. Rules have been made

reduction should help move the accu

Domestic beet competition Is keenly felt

New York refiners will l»e largely limited
to local territory for business. The pres
ent year. It Is generally believed, has not
been very profitable for local refining In*
tcrests, because of. ‘he average high
price of their raw sugar.
The Rice Market.
The rice market lias shown no activ
ity of consequence, largely owing to the
fuet that distributors were busy with the
holidny goods and purchased only as
pressing needs required. In some jobbing
circles a fairly good business was taken
subject to Janmiry dating of bills, but
generally speaking receivers were Indlf-
fereht pending the passing of inventories.
Stress Is still laid In locn| circles on the
scarcity of Honduras sorts, the assort
ment of which Is poor so that prices
hold firm. •
The Japan situation la causing a differ
ence of opinion In loral circles. Some
argue that the deadlock between miller
and farmer must bo broken In favor of
the former who. it la pointed out. will bo
helped by the lack of trade demand. Oth
ers say that Japans are selling over
cent less than a year ago. and being
attractive will find a large buying

some circles to pursue a waiting policy
as the major part of the yield Is Japan
