JNEW YORK. Dec. 24.—With a closed
interval of three days In prospect on ac
count of the holiday from tonight until
inext Monday there was little disposi
tion to operate on n large scale In stocks.
Nmv commitment* were unimportant and
I the day'* business was largely dovoted
to closing up contracts already open.
This seemed to operato both ways In
the market, serving to Illustrate the
decided confusion In which speculative
ientlment stands at present. Short cov
ering was In evidence at some points,
which was left over from the active sell
ing earlier in the week.. In other quar
ters there was liquidation of long ac
counts. There waa & pronounced movc-
iment in the Vanderbilt group in pursu
ance of the supposition that an early
entry into active direction of the affairs
of that property will be made by K. II.
Harrlman. The railroad equipment stocks
responded to reports of resumption of
mill activities of some of these proper
ties. American Smelting was weak and
showed the continuing effort of the for-
imidahle competition said to be organl-
nislng In Its field of industry. U. 8. Steel
was also Inclined to be heavy and was
affected by the moderate rate of expan
sion reported to bo in progress In steel
Industry. In the bond market there were
traces of relnventment demand. The
tone wan Irregular. Total sales, par
value 38.340,000. United 8tates bonds re
mained unchanged on call for one week.
Total sales of stocks today were 842,3001

UTEREST CENTERS
IN CUBAN SUGAR
the sugar market during the past week
has centered about lha movement of the
now Cuban crop, which being earlier than
last year, and according to preliminary
estimates larger, Is making dully new
low price levels. Bales have bean mado
to the American and Arbuckle as low as
3.C7 cents duty paid New York, a 10
Int decline for the week, fully 40,000
ns being reported taken.
The prevailing quotation for raw sugar,
though made In December before a sin
gle bag of new Cuhaa. had arrived. Is the
>weat figure reached during the last
crop year, pointing to the urgent desire
of planters to anticipate. There are now
38 centrals grinding cano In Cuba and
the number should Increate rabidly after
tho holidays, so'thst next month refiners
expect more pressure and lower offers;
some say oven 2 cents and freights. The
refined situation has not Improved, the
demand from distributors continuing un
usually dull even for December. This
stagnation, coupled with a decline In tho
price of raw sugar started further cut
ting, atanclurd* granulated dropping 10
points to 4.60 cents net ror prompt ship
ment. Brokers are doubtru! of business
being materially stimulated, though the
reduction should help move the acou-
mulathm here and at consigned points.
Domestic beet competition Is keenly felt
because of the 10 point differential, and
until this sugar Is out of the way the
New York refiners will be largely limitin'
to local territory for business. The pres
ent year. It Is generally believed, lias not
been very profitable for local refining In
terests. because of the average high
price of their raw sugar.
The Rice Market. N
The rtco market lias shown no actlv
Ity of consequence, largely owing to tho
fact that distributors were busy with tho
holiday goods and purchased only as
pressing needs required. In same Jobbing
circles a fairly good laislness was taken
subject to January dating of bills, but
generally speaking receivers were Indif
ferent pending the passing of Inventories.
Stress Is still laid In loesi circles on the
scarcity of Honduras sorts, tho assort
ment of which Is poor so that prices
hold firm.
The Japan situation Is causing a differ
ence of opinion In local circles. Some
argue that the deadlock Imtwcen miller
and farmer must be broken In favor of
the former who. It Is pointed out, will bo
helped by the lack of trade demand. Oth
ers sny that Japans are soiling over a
cent less than a year ago, and being so
attractive will find a large buying move
ment from wholesale grocers. The gov
ernment crop report may have caused
some circles to pursue a waiting policy
as the major part of the yield la Japan
rice, but In other quarters the estimates
lire considered too high.
