THE YEAR SEEMS CHOCK FULL OF GOOD THINGS IN THE WAY OF IMPROVEMENTS—NEW EN TERPRISES AND NEW CITIZENS —THE OUTLOOK 18 ALL ONE COULD WISH. •Before the week ends a new year will begin, and the now calendar on the wall will be ready for the peeling oft of the months as they roll by. With the peeling uff of the months there will be a pulling off of the pro jected things for Macon. Therefore conies the question, what will Macon have accomplished when the new cal endar sheds its last sheet, and the 365 days have been checked oft? He fore another new year comes, the b’g dam of the Central Georgia Power Co. will be completed, and its thous ands of horse power scampering nimb ly over the big copper wires into Ma con, lighting up the city streets, light ing up the houses, and furnishing the motive power for nearly every wheel that turns in the way of machinery. Macon, being the base of supplies, the headquarters, of this immense plant, will <bo the gainer by hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the electric current will be furnished so cheap that It will bo used everywhere and for everything. Tho company have a guarantee from the constructing com pany that the dam will be finished in a certain length of time, and that time expires long before Christmas. Then comes 4 tho Interurban lines, one from Macon to Atlanta, and one from Macon to Albany. These lines have been cared for financially, but they are depondent to a great extent on tho completion of tho power plant that thoy may use the current. Thoso in position to know say that the lines will be running In each direction before the year is out. The Central of Georgia Railway Co, will have their shops extended. Tho h'gh officials of the road say that at least a quarter of a million dollars will be spent on this work, and the work will be commenced before the second month is pulled from the cal endar. Resultant on this Is the coming of two or three hundred skilled mechan ics, who will come to make their homes In Macon. This means much to Ma- GEORGIANS “STUCK” BY INSURANCE PLAN 8MOOTH-TALKING CAROLINIANS IN DUCED MANY TO SUBSCRIBE TO SEMINOLE CO. con, not only for the good citizens they will make, but for the money they will spend with the shops and tho stores. Their coming will put many a dollar In circulation. Before many more sheets have been peeled off from the calendar, tho big brick grain and storage warehouse at tho city bridge will be up and doing. This will give employment to more men. and It will be a big thing for Macon in many ways. Before the first sheet is pulled off the calendar, electric signs will bo made in Macon. Heretofore Macon bUHingga men had to send their money off for these signs. Then comeg the enterprises fathered by tho Chamber of Commerce. These are not dreams, but are In the way of realities. Thesu are tho Tourist hotel, and the erection of one is only the beginning of ;i chain of them. Then the commercial Ijotel, which I* practically Asaurodg " Then a ten-story'building, which the Chamber of Commerce lias In view and wh'eh may be built. Tho contractors and the architects are looking forward to a big year of building and Improvements. Many have been waiting for the coming of the new year before making up their minds, but the new year opens under such br'ght prospects that there Is now no longer any hesitancy, and the architects will soon be busy. Everything points to n big year and lots of lmppy returns. Tho merchants will now go to stock-taking, and when they get in n position to know what they havo got, and tho actual busi ness of tho past year, they will be ready to put their shoulders to the wheel of anything that looks good to Macon. Tho new year will witness the re instatement of all tho employes of tho Georgia Southern and Florida railroad nearly all of them now being back at work. Mr. Henry Horne, with health fully recovered, has something good to tell soon, and altogether all Is well. The first day of January. 1909, find roses blooming In the front yards of the city. Certainly the new year begins with a rosy promise of big things for Macon. Impure blood runs you down—makes you an eA*y victim for organic dleeaes. OPINION OF STOCKS RATHER UNSETTLED DURING SHORT WEEK THERE ARE SUDDEN SHIFTS IN SPECULA TIVE SENTIMENT. NEW YORK, Dec. 27—The closing of the stock exchange last wec«c on Thursday evening to remain closed un til Monday morning mode the week a short one In flnunclnl affaire, the bank ing business on Saturday providing largely nominal. Then* were develop, ments of Importance, notwithstanding the shortness of tho porlod and the sudden shifts in speculative sentiment in regard to identical circumstances indicated n rather unsettled state ot opinion. This fluctuating atate of sen timent was fairly Illustrated in tho change of views of the significance of the 'Colorado and Southern purchase by tho Chicago. Burlington and Quincy. Incident Brings Buying. This Incident was mode to figure as one of tho lmpulllng causes and In the later strong rebound It was assigned equally as tho ground for enthusiastic speculative buying. The first point of view was due to professed apprehen sion that this might forecast a strug gle similar to that precipitated by the first control of the Burlington in the Joint Interest of the Great Northern and the Northern Pacific, which had such disastrous consequences to the speculative position in 1901. The fact of a rupture of old relations having occurred between H. Hawley, the con veyor of the control of tho Southwest nrn property, and E. II. Harrlman, was made to aeem to corroborate this view. Other circumstances conduced to the break In prices on Monday, the formation of influential opposition to the American Smelting and Refining Company bringing Into hostility other important groups of financial powers. The Carnegie Bomb. The substance of the testimony Andrew Carnegie before the ways and means committee of the house representatives wns Interpreted critical among influential powers In tho steel trade. A largo factor In tho hope ful spirit which has grown up over tho financial prospect is the conviction that the most powerful of the great finan cial groups had been brought Into such a state of harmonious relations tn tho adjustments of the havoc wrought by last year's financial crisis that Insur ance was secured against any destruc tive hostilities for an Indefinite time to come. The misgivings felt early In the week were largely dlasipated by tho subsequent rebound |n -prices. In this rebound the alleged extensive plans of E. II. Harrlman for readjust ment of railrosd relations once moro played an Important part. Talk of Mergers. A revised estimate of the Colonul and Southern transaction saw in it < prelude to other combinations along tho same lines which would bring nil tho available Southwestern and Gulf outlet railroad system Into combination with tho different northwestern rn‘l rood powers. When they reached Mrs. Forbes* homo they found Mrs. Hllshy sitting on the steps, sobbing.
