' In commencing tho publication cf anew vol* nine oftliu Ladv’s Boom, the proprietors gti dl'* avail themselves of the opportunity thus "llLri ; L*f again inviting attuiti *.i to their work. 1 Notwitluitaiidtug the necessary ttnavrddabl.i difficulties ugainst which they have ha l to err j tend, they find themselves at the close cf their first year enjoying, through an unexampled ox. tent of patronage, all the advantages which bed. n c to old established and long prosperous public-, tions. For this liberality cu the part of the pub lie they are truly grateful, and it. shall be tlir i prido and j luasure to pursue siidi na an ? as vvi l deserve its continuance. Tbeaume Zealand d<- votim winch they have hitherto felt and czkitr |"l in regard to their work, will still be f. u ilia influence tin :.o, and with tha additional frci.ith \ now witliin their reach they hope to render tl.-s coming volume even more attractive than th: W wliieh li.is just been closed. 'They have in roe tamplation many improvements, a particular en umeration of which they deem unimportant, nett doubling that the promptness and fidelity ui:‘* which they have fulfilled all former engagements, have created public confidence in their ability t k perform whatever they may feel disposed to ur dertako. They prefer that their work ahould bi tested by its own merits, rather than rely for sup port on any specious promises which they might put forth. Since the commencement cfTtiE Lxnv’s Boc* the publishers have avoided all proper matter of offence to the proprit tors of contemporary period icals. In the occasional notices which they havo, f< It themselves culled upon to mike in relation to. tho progress and prospects of their own work they have made no allusion which could be con strued disparagingly toothers. They have pur sued this course from motives of justice and poli cy—as well because it corresponded with their own feelings, as because they believed it woul-I contribute to their intercuts. They believed tha& j with the American public no good end could hi* achieved by uncalled-for interference with th s rights of others, and they have yet to learn that in this opinion they have been mistaken, Tho pat ronage which they have hitherto received assure.-* . them of tjie favourable regard in which their worß i.i held; and they know* that they can only look > for future encouragement in a proper employ ment of tho amplo means within their power U* ' give increased satisfaction. The publishers of Tub Lady’s Book takr* pleasure iu acknowledging their obligations to tho conductors of the public press in all sections ct' the country. Tho general commendation wliiei* these gentlemen have bestowed upon their woris is doubly gratifying to them because they have*, reason to believe it is deserved, and they know* that *t has been productive of great ad vantage.— It Is a source of much excusable pride to the pub lishers that the comments which the Book haa elictcd have) uniformily been favourable. In n<* Instance have tltey had the mortification of find ing their efforts, to please, unsuccessful, or im properly appreciated. The publishers cannot bo iieve that the remarks, contained in a recent ad vertisement of a contemporary journal, to which, their attention has been specially called, uri* meanttoalludo to the Lady’s Book. The insin uations there expressed concerning “ cast-off plate. mere reprint and mutilated music," can haven* reference to a publication whose costly embel lishments and general merits have been for many* months a theme of general admiration and eulo gy. They cannot think the publishers of th journal spoken of so deficient in respect to a pub lic upon whom they depend for support, as to. charge that public with a gross want of per ception, and an inability to discriminate iu mat ters of literary judgement. The publishers oF 'The Lady’s Book know that the minds of somo men are so unhapUy framed that they cannot en dure successful competition in those pursuits ii* which they may happen to be engaged; and they further know that those who are enviou3 of supe rior desert are frequently prompted to tho indul gence of a malicious spirit; but they will not wil lingly believe that tho conductors of the journal to which they have had allusion ought to be iden tified with either of these classes. On the con trary, they are satisfied that tho ambiguous cen sures thus spread beforo the public are itffelide i to bo applied to some publication whose want of merit rendered it obnoxious to such coudemn.- tion. Tho Publishers of The Lady’s Bdofc have o!> served that several monthly periodicals have no. only imitated tho general arrangement of their work, but have also attempted to follow the ir ex ample in illustrating the. Fashions. This tacii acknowledgement of the superiority of their plan, is certainly gratifying, and they recognize itwiti* pleasure; but at the game time they cannot for bear saying that as they wore the first to intro duce successfully this particular species of embel lishment, so they can now present it in a form ot greater perfection than it cau readily bo accoin plished by others. They do not make this remark invidiously, hut as an act of simple justice t> themselves, and the artists employed under then* directions. In concluding this card the jabluhora renew* their assurances of steadily persisting in their en deavours to improve thu character o Ins Lady's Book. In. its present ntate they have no tear of a comparison with any similar publication, and they Hatter themselves that the time is net distant when its superiority will ho generally acknowl edged. They have no wish to boast of corres pondents iu Russia or'‘Constantinople,” satisfied that whatever they may require in this way the;/ can procure much nearer honje.
