Knigbta of Pythias.
The Grand Lodge of Knights of Pythias
meets in this city on the 18th instaDt. The
Grand Lodge is composed of delegates
from the various lodges in the State- Its
officers are: P- W. Meldrim, Past Grand
Chancellor, W. K. Pearce, Grand Chan
cellor; It- G. Fitts, Grand Vice Chancel
lor; C. J. Stroberg, Grand Prelate; M. M.
Hill, Grand Master of Exchequer; S. C.
Roberts, Grand Keeper of the Records and
Seal; J. C. Shecnt, Grand Master at
Arms; S. C. Lee, Grand Inner Guard; T.
j. Carling, Grand Outer Guard; Felix
Corput, Supreme Representative; R. R.
Richards, Supreme Representative.
The order of Knights of Pythias pre
sents a wonderful example of quick
growth and popularity. This is the
seventeenth Pythian yecr, originating in
Washington city, the order has now
reached a membership of about 500,000
and has extended itself tlirougljfut the
United States and Canada. In Georgia
there are eight lodges, the largest of
which is the Central City lodge, of Macon,
numbering about one hundred members.
Mr. D. B. Woodruff is Grand Chancellor
of the World, and has held the position for
five years; he was lately in Louisiana for
the purpose of organizing a Grand Lodge,
and it is said, will next year be sent to
England for the same purpose.
The order Is a charitable brotherhood,
having a mutual insurance feature, and a
fund for the support of the sick, and wid
ows and orpham of its members. In one
class the insurance reaches $2,000 and in
the other $1,000.
The Central City lodge is in a most
flourishing condition, having in its treas
ury about $1,500.
—Nihilists secmiugly begin to under
stand that every enemy does not deserve
to be punished with death. A few even
ings ago the chief of the police at Kieff
was seized while returning from a visit to
some friends, tied, blindfolded, thrown
into a carriage, and escorted to an isolated
house in the suburbs of the city. There
his eyes were uncovered, and he saw him
self surrounded by a host of persons wear
ing masks and dressed in black. Four of
the masks undressed him, and, stretching
his body upon a board, flogged him until
they fancied he had had enough of it. He
was next required to sign a receipt for the
flogging he had receivd. This the poor
man refused to do, but lie was Anally
persuaded by threats of auother dose of
the knout. lie was then dressed again,
lied, blindfolded, and conveyed in a car
riage to tlie corner nearest to the police
heaihjuarters. The authors of the out
rage, despite the most active efforts of the
police, remain undiscovered.
—Among the stories which are told at
St. Petersburg of the attempts made by the
Xihilists to penetrate into the Winter
Palace is the following: General Gourko,
when Governor of St. Peterburg, had the
tight of entering at any time into the Em
peror’s room without being announced.
Once, however, the doorkeeper, seeing
something unusual about his appearance,
stopped him, saying that it would be nec
essary to inform the Emperor of his arri
val. The General objected at first, but,
finding that the doorkeeper only grew
more suspicious, ultimately agreed to his
being announced. The doorkeeper then
told the Emperor of his doubts; upon
which the latter went to a writing table
in his room, which was connected by tele
graph with General Gourko’s residence,
and telegraphed, “Where is Gourko?”
“At home,” was the reply. This, of
course, settled the point; the false Gourko
was at once arrested, and turned out to be
a member of the revolutionary committee.

—An old letter in which Senator
Thomas H. Benton announced his mar
riage to his friend, the late Judge Walsh,
of St. Louis, is still preserved in the lat
ter's family. “Long before the drowsy and
heedless post-boy shall transport to yon
this scrawl,” writes young Benton, “your
friend Benedict will cease to belong to the
order of bachelors. Time, which puts an
end to everything, has now put an end to
my endless courtship, and in the month of
May I shall hope for the happiness of im
parting a part of my happiness to all my
friends in St. Louis, both male and female,
by presenting to them one who is every
thing te me, and I hope will be something
to them.”
—The present attraction at the Jardin
des Plantes in Paris is a female bear of
the American species and her cub. The
latter is so comical in its motions that
crowds of visitors constantly throng
around the pit iu which the pair are con
fined. Two or three times a day the
mother takes the cub to the bathing tnb
and teaches him to swim. The lesson
being over, she takes him with her teeth
and shakes him to and fro till the exercise
and the warmth of her breath have dried
his hair. The cub promises to develop in
to the most wonderful dancer of its spe
cies.

GENERAL PRESENTMENTS
JONE8 COUNTY.
The Grand Jury chosen and sworn for the
April term of the Superior Court, 1889. beg leave
to submit the following general prts-n ments.
We are phased to resort our public roads in
good traveling condition. We recommend that
all the obatrucions in the new-cut road leading
from Clinton to Maron be removed.
We also recommend that the bridge across
Walnut creek at Hutchings’ mill be done away
with, and a good ford be made instead by blast
ing the rock.
We also recommend that the bridge across
Falling creek, known as Card’s bridge,be rebuilt
by the contractors, as it was washed away before
tbe time for keeping it up haa expired, and that
said bridge be extended to such length, as the
county Judge in bit discretion mav deem neces
sary, and that aaid extension be let to the lowest
bidder.
We atao recommend that the bridge across
Caney creek, between Buck Maddox and the
church, be repaired by the contractors and put
in gcod order—tbe lime for keeping it up not ex
pired, and said bridge in a dangerous condition.
Alter examining the books of the county offi
cers it gives pleasure to report that we find them
correctly and neatly kept. Our coun y treasur
er has exhibited proper roucturs for all money
collected and paid by.bim, and we add our tesri-
mony to hit efficiency and honeeiy. He row has
on hanu a balanoe of thirty-two hundred and
ei.hteen dollars and twenty-three cents.
Onraheriffand tax collector has handled no
money belonging to the oounty since our last
court. His books have been property kept te
the best of our judgment. We believe him to be
an active, vigilant officer, entitled to the confi
dence of onr peopla
Our desk aud ordinary, the Hon. Roland T.
Roaa. we still find, as ever in the past, the same
faithful aud efficient officer. Hi» books, both ia
the clerk's and ordinary’s office, correctly kept,
with the books iu the clerk's office written np to
date, and the ordinary’s books potted up to 1839.
We recommend here that certain old records in
the clerk’s and ordinary's office be rebound and
indexed—all inch at he may deem neeesasry.
We feel it our duty to add our testimony to the
faithfulness of this officer, who has served us
long and well.
In examining the hooks of the connty judge it
affords ns pleasure to report he has in our opin
ion aatiafaetoriiy administered the law as in
trusted to him. We find a very great decrease
in the annual expenses of our Superior court,
and a Very marked reduction in jail fees. It is
worthy oi notice that crime baa mateiially de
creased, ard we find the general condition ol the
county good indeed, compared wilh the past, fur
all ol which Us honor Judge Richard Johnson
deserves very great credit.
We have examined tbe report aud hooka ot our
oounty tohool.com.ttitsiouef, U. W. ) ester, and
they ere correct and well kept, and he ia an ex
cellent comniiisioner. We have elected E. C.
Grier and H. 8. Greaves to fill the vacancies in
tbe board of education.
We recommend that f ueh repairs as have been
suggested by onr apecial committee to examine
publio buddings, be made under tho direction of
tho officer intrusted w<th that duty.
We recommend the county judge to appoint
three persona In each district u> see after all va-
praata, and that tbs law in thia particular mat
ter be strictly enioreed.
In taking leave of HU Honor Judge Lawson,
we tender biut our sincere thanks for the kind
and oohsidera’e manner in which he has treated
ns, and we are confident that none of oar public
interests will suffer under his careful and scru
tinising administration.
Xo colonel Whitfield, ohr solicitor general, we
also tender onr sincer e thank* tor the kind, con-
sidrate manner in which he haa been pleased to
treat ns. ■
" We recommend these presentments bepub-
