i?* Siwmwd & Washington Corresptmaenoe, Washington City, May 12tli, 1680. MB. HILL commenced liis speech against Kellogg yesterday. I dropped over . about two p. m. and found the galleries tolerably well filled, as were also the seats on the Demo cratic side below, hut only a beggarly ar ray of empty benches on the Radical side. For some cause or another they had fled somewhere. Notmore than a half dozen were v'sible during my stay, and with the exception of Malt Carpenter notone of any prominence. Bruce and Burnside chatted over a paper the latter was sliowr ing the former, and old Whiskers looked from where I sat, rather amazed at Bruce’s coolness in interrupting him MriUriUthroq while he was at work, evidently on some very weighty matters of correspondence. Plumb, Angus Cameron, Rollins and Kellogg kept Burnside,' Bruce and Carpenter company, all of them, especially the latter, looking 'as if the proceedings had no interest lor them and that they were in their seats merely as a matter of routine. Mr. Hill had close attention from his Democratic colleagues and from the galleries, and was making, judging from what I heard of it, an exceptionally able argument. He did not finish yester day but will to-day. It is all a waste of breath on both sides, however. Kellogg will not be unseated this session, at least, and I capitally doubt whether he will be troubled at all. I am sure tliat at least a dozen leading Democratic Senators will vote against his expulsion, and of course all the Radicals. The doctrine of res adjudicata will prevail in this case and save Kellogg from being remanded to pri vate life. ’ • THE ADJOITBNMENT FEVEB seems to have seized upon both Houses, and the cry is that the 31st of May at the latest must be the end of the show. Randall is regarded as the inspiration of this ieeling, and his motives as having direct connection with his own political fortunes. He is said to really entertain Presidential aspirations and to regard himself as old Tilt ten’s residuary legatee in the event the latter is sat down upon at Cincinnati. I don’t think he if regarded as having the ghost of a chance, but all the same the Presidential bee is buzzing very merrily in his bonnet and’ when that is the case of course there is no telling what au idiot a man may prove him self to be. Another reason Randall will force an adjournment is because he hopes thereby to defeat all' changes in the pres ent robber tariff. He, like all other Penn sylvanians, is for that first. They subordi nate partisan politics and everything else to it, and judging from their actions most of them would sell out party and party principles any day rather than see or aid any tariff reform or even revision. Therefore, I shall be greatly surprised if Randall does not succeed in carrying his scheme for this early adjournment. One thing is sure, however, about this business, and tliat is that an adjournment at the time indicated will leave a vast mass of most important legislation in an unfinished state. THE POLITICAL POT, at loast that of the radicals, boils more tumultuously every day. It seems to me the top will surely fly off before the 2nd ofJuuc. No amount of weight can keep it on. The Grant gang and the Sherman gang and the Blaine gang are getting more and more hostile in their demonstrations towards each other, and throw mud and call names with a most refreshing and de served vigor. The Grant and Blaine men are more venomous towards each other than either are towards the Shermanites. Latterly, Grant’s friends are using a good many cuss words towards Washburne. They charge that he has made a bargain with Blaine to knife the ex-President at tlie proper time and then i Blaine to the front over Sherman. But the Grant men are still game to the core. They scout and scorn the Blaine-Waslibume alliance or any-other. They claim that the “old man” has a dead sure thing in Illinois, and that Ills bolting Chicago delegates will be admitted to the State convention, and Blaine’s and Sherman’s friends have the door shut their faces. I feel sure, too, that they know what they are talking about. Illinois will vote for the “old man” in the convention dead sure. You see I still stick to the faith, so often ex pressed in your columns, in the “old man’s” lucky star. I can’t see any other outcome at Chicago, knowing as I do what will surely happen when the negro delegates see tLe Grant eagle unchained, and" hear him scream. The devil himself couldn’t hold them then, much less John Sher man’s or Blaine’s mouey and their solemn promises. I can even now see and hear the men and brethren, when some silver tongued Grant orator names him as the man for their suffrage. Lord 1 What a stampede there will be from Sherman and Blaine to “My Jesus,” as tli« old negro woman at Vicksburg called Grant when she first caught sight of him in the sleep ing car. “Dar sets my Jesus wid de stove pipe hat on,” was the old darkey’s remark in full, and she voiced the opinion of nine- tenths of her race. THE DEMOCRATS arc still horridly at sea as to who shall be named at Cincinnati. Old Tilden, I am sorry to say, has the best chance so far,but I Have an abiding faith that the Democrats - are not yet ready to commit deliberate sui cide. 1 believe liis nomination will anni hilate the Democratic parly, and if he got 100 electoral votes it would to me be the surprise of my life. Sorely, the great Democratic party will not allow itself to bo delivered into his deadlT embrace. I cannot and will not believe it until forced to do so. Of late Judge Field has showed some slight inclination to loom up among the probabilities. It is norated here that his fortunes are being pushed inGeoigia by a prominent Democrat, who was here most of the session, and who has a very large acquaintance among the editors and politicians of Georgia. It is also affirmed that he is Tilden’s second choice. It almost makes me swear when I think what Thurman’s chances might now be if he had not, in a' mo ment of fatal weakness, softly turned Ills back upon the convictions of a life-time to dally with the.Delilah of financial heresy. Who shall blame me if I even cross the line of “almost,” and do say bad words when the memory of that blunder fcrces- itself upon me. Biotont that, and who could stand against him in convention or in the field ? Well, we shall see what we shall see, but my fer vent prayer is that the close of the contest at Cincinnati shall not see the Tilden ban ner uplifted over the sullen and demoral ized ranks of the American Democracy —an army beaten in advance and solely conscious of the bitter fact I "* A.
