FRIDAY, JULY 2, 1660.
—Queen Victoria completed the forty-
third year of her reign, Sunday. She has
reigned nearly as long as Queen Elizabeth
—The London Saturday Itnicio de
clares John Russell Young's account of
Grant’s tour around the world “about the
worst book of its size in the world.”
—Montreal has lighted its wharves with
the electric light placed on the tops of
telegraph poles three hundred yards’apart,
and ships now unload as readily by night
as by day. . ■
—The Sick Man of Europe is very Sick
indeed, this summer. The consulting
doctors at Berlin have their hands full.
They may pull him through again but the
odds are against them.
Compi.ajnts are beginning to come up
from disappointed municipalities in every
direction. They are not half as large as
they imagined. Many will be disappoint
ed in the population of Macon.
—A public meeting was held at Eaton,
Ohio, to discuss tlu marriage of a white
woman and a black man. A resolution to
drive the couple out of the village was
discussed, and voted down.
—Statistics show that more shipwrecks
and collisions occur on the coast of Eng
land than anywhere else, as the shipping
and commerce of the world centre in the
neighborhood; but they arc ten times less
frequent than they were twenty years ago.
—Noah Towner committed suicide at
Central, West Virginia, because he had
not been true to bis sweetheart. “I de
ceived her,” he said in a letter, “and now
I am going to my everlasting reward,
where the smoke of my torment will as
cend up for ever and ever.
—Colonel Thomas A. Scott, the retir
ing ex-president of tlie Pennsylvania
road, in compliance' with the request of
the directors of the company, will con
tinue to render unofficial assistance in
conducting the affairs of the company,
and he will occupy one of the most acces
sible rooms in its central office.
—Several years ago, at the beginning of
the petroleum excitement, a young man,
whose father left him a farm in the oil re
gions, became possessed of great wealth,
which he spent. He was known as “Coal
Oil Johnny.” lie became a gambler, and
he is now in prison in Cincinnati on a
charge of roltkiug a countryman.
—“The most contemptible thing thus
far about Chicago,” said the Louisville
Commercial of June 4, “is the clutter
about Garfield. He has not a record to
run on for President, and it is extreme
foolishness to be wasling time on him.”
The Commercial has since gulped down
Gnrlicld anjl is contending that lie has a
good record to run on, with how much
sincerity any ouc may imagine.
Re-exodustixp.—Says the St. Louis
Globe-Jicmocrat of Sunday: Lugging a
lot of old boxes, dilapidated satchels and
big chunks of ham and bacon, came an
other squad of about twenty negroes to
the levee yesterday. But their guiding
star was leading them to, instead of from,
the Sunny South. They had experienced
the Northern cold and the blasting of
high hopes for just a year, and were satis
fied that their native parish in Louisiana
was the best place for them after all. In
Kansas, the head of the party explained,
the little money they earned went to pay
doctors for fighting chills and fever, which
came alike to the wliite-wooled and the
picaninnies. Work was scarce, and rais
ing com and cotton suited them better.
A Beastly Kind of Insurance.—
The Yuma, California, Sentinel tells of
a novel insurance plan, as follows: “Mr.
David Balz, who counts his cattle by the j
thousands, has adopted a novel method;
to provide for the future of his two chil
dren. He has selected thirty head of two
year old heifers from different bands, all
of pure blood and well bred, and given
them to his children, and has charged
himself with the maintenance of the same
and their increase until the children are
of age. We have made a careful esti
mate of the probable number of cattle
his children will have on their becoming
of age, and find it enormous. Reckoning
an increase of £$£ per cent, and the time
sixteen years, it amounts to 2,059 head,
worth, we will say, $30 per head, and ag
gregate the snug little sum of $62,910.”
—A good story is told of General
Grant when taking liis early morning
walk in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Saturn
day week last. Wc arc told when near
East River bridge he met a man making
an effort to walk fast with a shockingly
bad-looking home-made wooden leg. The
General stopped him and asked how he
lost his leg. The man replied in the
army. The General then asked him why
he did not get a better leg, to which he re
plied that he was poor, had a largo family
and could not affort it. The General
handed him $25, with the remark that it
would help him to get a better leg. The
man expressed his gratitude over and over
and said that he was on his way to tlie
city to see General Grantj and when that
was accomplished his happiness would be
complete. The General extended his
hand with tlie remark, “You now see
General Grant,” when the soldier extend
ed ooth hands and embraced the General,
his tears showing his joy and gratitude,
—“The Falls of Niagara were dry for a
whole day,” said the Rev. Dr. T. B. Ful
ler of Hamilton, Ontario, in a recent
lecture. The accuracy of the story was.
questioned, and now the elergymau pub
lishes tlie sworn* statements of several
persons slio saw the phenomenon. They
say it occurred on March 31, 1846. At 5
o’clock in the morning so little water was
dribbling over, that a man and his daugh
ter wplketl half way .across from the
Canadian slime, MMt the edge of the
precipice. The girl stack a pole into a
crevice of tlie rock, and left a handker
chief flying from the top. Not content
with this feat, lliey went half a mile
above the fall, and rode part way across
the bed of the river in a wagon. Others
did similar things. The jagged rocks at
tlie bottom below the falls were exposed,
Tlie strange condition lasted liutfl night
fall, when the stream began rapidly to
swell, and before morning was as large as
usual. Dr. Fuller’s theory is as follows:
“The winds had been blowing down Lake
Erie, which is only about thirty feet deep,
and rushing a great deal of water from it
over the fklls; It then suddenly changed,
and blew this little water (comparatively

will be spent in Europe by Americans
this year, of which sum W. H. Vander
bilt is expected to contribute at least $1,-
000,000. London and Paris tradesmen
keep a sharp lookout for the new arrivals,

—It is rumored and also denied that the
reason why the British Court supports the
bill providing for marriage with a dead
wife’s sister is in order to bring about a
marriage between the Grand Duke of
Hesse and the Princess Beatrice. The
Grand Duke was the husbaud of Beatrice’s
sister, the late Princess Alice.

whither they have taken refuge after their

Nothing remains now but to hold Mexico
responsible should they recross the- fron-
