THE “HAT-BACK” MAH.
A Colored Individual wlio learned
tUc Alphabet In Fifteen Minutes.
“There are three great cariosities in St.
Louis,” said an old resident to a visiting
relative, “the great bridge, Shaw’s garden
and the ‘hat roan’ atthe Lindell.”
“I have already examined the bridge,”
said the visitor; “we visit Shaw’s Garden
this aitemoon, I believe, and as I stop at
the Lindell the ‘hat man’ I have already
seen and wondered at.”
The above conversation was overheard
by a reporter for the Globe-Democrat, and
he at ouce determined if the “hat _ man”
was so great a wonder to ascertain.the
fact and let the many thousand readers of
this paper know about the prodigy who is
so well known by the traveling public.
A visit was made to the wide, breezy
hall in front of the dining room at the
Lindell, where, upon one side, was ranged
a long hat rack, already well filled with a
miscellaneous assortment of head gear,
comprising all styles in straw, silk, fur,
wool, in every variety and of various
shapes and fashions. Probably there were
no two hats exactly alike except in the
way of silk tiles audthe fashionable shape
of straw hats.
a bright young colored man, rather tall
and slender, dressed with scrupulous neat
ness, was taking the hats from a file of gen
tlemen who were passing rapidly iuto the
dining-room, and when his arms were full
the load was placed upon the hat-rack as
convenience suggested. Other gentlemen
were constantly coming out, when without
the slightest hesitation the proper and
identical hat was selected from the hun
dreds and handed to the owner with a
bow, a smile, and perhaps a polite greet
ing.
This was James J. Allen.
TUB HEXOAVNED “HAT MAX,”
of the Lindell Hotel. His forehead is
high, not especially or noticeably well de
veloped upon the memory bumps, his fea
tures regular and quite dark m complex
ion. Nearly every one of the strangers
stopping at the hotel would he astounded,
and ask, “How did you know that to be
my hat?” The boarders and regular
traveling patrons took their hats without
a second glance, being confident, as it
seemed, that Allen knew their hats as
well or better than they did themselves.
MOW IIE DOES IT.
“Tell me, Allen,” said the reporter,
“how do you do this hat business?”
“I take one instantaneous glance at bat
and face, and in doing so thereafter tbe
hat and face go together, one being, as it
were, a part of the other. 1 imagine a re
semblance between them, anil so, when
the face comes out of the dining-room, I
put my hands on the hat that will com
plete the mental photograph. Sometimes
gentlemen stay in the diningroom as long
as an hour and a half. If I should be
come dim in my remembrance ol any hat,
I take it up, and look pt it, and see the
owner’s image in and around it.”
‘•How long have you been here ?”
“Four years at the hat stand. Before
that I was parlor-boy—the proprietors say
the best one they ever had—and I was
called the ‘priuce of waiters’ by the la
dies.”
“Yon say, then, that this is an exercise
of memory ?”
“Yes; memory and imagination.”
“Did you know you possessed it before
taking this position ?”
“I did not; but it must have been there.
When a boy, I only required fifteen min
utes to learn perfectly the alphabet; and
all my lessons at school were learned at a
glance.”
“How old are you, Allen ?”
“Twenty-four.”
“Where born?”
“In Charleston, Mo., of slave parents.
If I had had advantages inscliooling, there
is no doubt but that this wonderful mem
ory of mine would have been utilized for
something belter than the hat rack.”
“Do you ever give out the wrong hat?”
“In the four years that I have been em
ployed here
I XEVEK MISSED
or had to pay for a hat? The gentlemen
sometimes try varions schemes to bother
rue, such as exchanging hats, etc., but I
am never at fault.”
“You must have a large acquaintance?”
“J know thousands of men and can call
their names when I meet them, even if I
have only seen them once. This faculty
of memory with me extends to faces,
names and numbers. Sometimes guests
Yay to me: ‘When I come again you
won’t knew me,’ and it may be a year or
so afterwards when they come; perhaps
they have forgotten ths conversation, and
are surprised beyond measure when I re
call it and call them by their names. A
man the other day made me a present,
and asked if I would know him again? I
said 1 would know him if we were to meet
in heaven and he were surrounded by a
convoy of auge’s dressed in white and
plaving on a golden harp.”
OF STEOXO RELIGIOUS BEXT.
“You are a church member, I should
judge,” said the reporter.
“O, yes, sir; I belong to St. Paul s M.
E. church. I have implicit faith in the
efficacy of prayer, aud I believe that any-
uiitig reasonable we ask for will be given.
“Here is this watch,” said Allen, “pre
sented to me at a church benefit as being
the most popular young man, the award
being made by vote.”
Tbe watch was an elegant double-cased
gold chronometer, stem-winder, and in
scribed in an appropriate manner. Allen
shows the watch, and wears it with justi
fiable pride.
“The children in the house think the
world and all of me,” continued Allen.
“Here is my card that a little boy had
printed for me.”
The card was a neat one, and proclaim
ed the fact that James J. Allen, of the Lin
dell Hotel, St. Louis, was the “hat man.”
“It amuses me,” said Allen, to hear
tho-
GUESTS OF T1IE HOUSE
explaining to one another how I do this
hat business. One man said the other day
that I put the bats of the tall men on the
top shelf, the short men's on the bottom
shelf, and the middle shelves devoted to
the hats of the fat men,” and he smiled
at the absurdity.
“Are you married ?”
“O, no, sir!” said he, in an alarmed
manner, “I live with my mother and mar
ried sister; and live happily.”
The proprietors of the hotel, the clerks,
aud the head waiter, A. C. Howard, all
speak in the highest terras of this noted
prodigy of memory, lie lias a mania for
collecting autographs, and day before
yesterday was delighted to receive one
from Gen. B. F. Butler. He told the
general he wanted to secure it before he
went to heaven, and Ben. drew down his
left eyelid and gave it to him.

The boy stood on the back-yard fence,
Whence all but him had fled,
The flames that lit his father’s bam
Shone just above tbe shed.
A pack of crackers in bis hand,
Two others in his hat,
In mournful accents loud he cried,
“I never thought of that!”
The pack of crackers to the tail
Of one small dog he’d tied;
The dog in anguish sought the barn,
And ’mid its ruins died.
The flames grew wild aud fierce and hot,
They lit upon that brat;
Thcy'lired those crackers in his hand,
And eke those in his hat.
Then came a burst of thunder sound—
The boy, where has he gone!
Ask of the winds that far around
Strewed bits of meat and bohe.
And scraps of clothes and shoes and hat,
And marbles, tops and yam—
The fragments of the dreadful boy
That burned his father’s bam!

A Democratic Lovefeast.—The
correspondent of tbe Philadelphia Ledger
says a great Democratic lovefeast is in
preparation in New York, at which John
Kelly and the anti-Tammany factions
will probably bury the liatcbet, smoke tbe
pipe of peace and resolve in future to
stand by their country. It is part of the
programme to invite Mr. Tildeu to pre
side.
—The plan for utilizing Genesee Falls
is really being carried out. The power Is
to be controlled by letting the water fall
into perpendicular cylinders in such a
manner as to compress air with tremen

In pipes to various points for use in run
ning machinery. The first novel applica
tion of the power will be to the propul
sion of street ears. It the scheme proves
successful, Niagara will be tried.
